I had been chasing this 1881 for over a year when, this past summer, I thought I had finally nailed it down with some trading fodder that the owner wanted. I actually had gone out, found, and purchased 2 of the guns the seller wanted in trade when he tells me that he had struck a deal with someone else. I then happened to be talking to a buddy of mine and he told me he was the one that bought it...neither one of us knew the other one was chasing it.
He and I were able to reach a mutually agreeable trade agreement while at the big Tulsa show a few weeks ago. It was mine, FINALLY
According to the factory records, it letters as a Model 1881, 40-60 caliber, 28" octagonal barrel, factory set triggers, shipped May 9, 1885:
It will be some ultimate sweet shooting when I take it out to the range a run a few rounds through it!!
Just thought I'd share with my fellow Marlin/levergun aficionados.
