Hmmm....Browning A5 or Remington 11-87??

Both are 12 gauge. Both are in excellent shape. Both are used and available for a reasonable price.
Either one would be used for occasional trips to the sporting clays range, pheasant and chukar fields, and maybe the odd duck blind. And the 11-87 must have blued steel and walnut furniture.

Which would you pick?

Me?? I've been pining for quite awhile for a really nice Belgian-made Browning A5 in 12 or 16ga. But lately, some really gorgeous 11-87's have been catching my eye.

If the decision were mine, I would have to pick the 11-87 and thats only cause I wouldn't feel so bad if the stock become scratched in the heat of a good hunt.

The 11-87 is a nice (ho, hum) shotgun, but the A5...

I am a fan of the A-5's Belguim, round knob. Yes they "clack" when the action cycles, but it has never bothered me. You must make sure your friction ring is correctly placed to shoot slower/faster loads, but agin once you figure it out it is no issue. I actually use a belguim gun with new invector barrels which is nice. I would bet the 11-87 is lighter unless the A-5 is a light weight model.
As always, whcih one feels best in your hands and points more naturally?

I'd go with the 11-87 for dead sure reliability but I'd have to go with the "Belgium" A-5 for nostalgia. Both are great shotguns but I have to give the nod to the 11-87 for duck blind use.

A Japan-made Browning A-5. Seriously. (no flames, please)
Better fit and finish than the Belgium A-5's, particularly the internals, and a MUCH lower cost.
It'll keep ticking while you're replacing o-rings on the 11-87.....

When I graduated from Law School in 1966 I bought myself a brand spanking new Browning Light Twenty A-5. I have killed ducks, geese, phesant, quail, doves, squirrels, rattlesnakes, and even a couple of turkeys with it. In fact, I have not hunted with any other shotgun since I bought it. I have also shot many rounds of skeet and sporting clays with it. It shows no signs of giving up the ghost.

Does that that tell you which one I would buy.

You can never go wrong with a design from the mind of John Browning. I have a Remington M 11 in 20, and love it.

For many years, I hunted with a Remington 1100, and I still own it, and another one to boot. Both are very good guns, and probably a bit softer on the shoulder, then the A5, but for the last several years I have owned and used extensively 2 different 2.75 inch Belgium A5's and one Japanese Magnum A5.

Nowdays, when it comes to shooting a semi-auto, my 1100's usually stay in the safe and the A5's get the nod. My oldest A5 was made way back there, and has the front trigger guard safety. This gun was heavely used, maybe even abused before I got it, and I have since shot several thousand rounds through it, and it still works perfectly, and I shoot it better then any other auto shotgun. And my big old Magnum A5 is the softest shooting 3 inch gun I have ever used, it's not going anywhere, and with the Japanese barrel, I can shoot steel in it without any worries.

I don't much care for the 1187s that I have shot, or been around. They don't seem to be as reliable as the old 1100's, espacally with light loads, frankly I will never own one.
