Replacing yellow mag follower

Post by hps »

Is this an easy and recommended upgrade? I really only hunt with this gun maybe 50-100 rds a year. If so can someone walk me through it.

Get the DVD, the follower and the ejector spring.

If you have one iota of mechanical aptitude, you can do it. These are not complicated machines to disassemble/reassemble. The design on the other hand...John Moses Browning was a genius.

You don't need a DVD for this simple change.

1st - remove the small screw on the bottom of the magazine at the muzzle end while holding the plug in place.

2nd - carefully lift the plug out remembering that it's holding a large mag spring down. Note the screw hole in the plug is larger on the bottom than on the barrel side. It must be replaced this way.

3rd - slide out the mag spring and tip the muzzle down to allow the yellow mag follower to slide out.

4th - slide the metal mag follower into the magazine, replace the spring, install the mag plug cap (remember about the screw hole), and replace the screw.

Now you're a gunsmith!!!

And Noah and some would say while you have this screw out that you should file or grind it off till it doesn't touch the barrel when you reasemble it(free floating the barrel type thing)!

But J Miller says don't mess with the magazine plug screw until you've shot that gun a bit and know what you're doing.
Since you asked how to do this, I can safely conclude you don't.

Some lever guns use the very end of the magazine plug screw to help keep the magazine in place. Winchesters, Rossis, some Marlins.
Others use a stud that's dovetailed into the barrel and the magazine plug screws passes through the plug into the this stud.

Some are a bit too long and can put pressure on the bottom of the barrel, but some of the holes these screws enter into are so shallow that if you shorten the screws you're risking barrel damage.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you own a Rossi 92 clone, the DVD is worth having. As is the ejector spring.

Hi All,

I've got a Puma 92 that's just a lot of fun to shoot. I got Steve's video, and parts.....it's a straight forward process.

You don't mention your chambering, but a straight swap out is E-Z.

If it's a .357, a follower can be made from an empty .40S&W case, or a suitable brass donor like a blackpowder measure.
