Marlin 1894 Makes Meat

Post by TedH »

Had my deer season cut short this morning. I got to hunt all of about two hours before I got a shot at this buck on the third time he passed through a narrow clearing. A doe and smaller buck came through first, followed by this guy a couple minutes later. He was hot on their trail and on the move, I only saw him for a few seconds and couldn't get a shot off. Dang, I thought to myself, missed a good opportunity there.

I grabbed my phone and texted my brother, who was about 1/4 mile away, to be on the lookout as the deer were headed in his direction. Before I could put my phone down, I'll be darned if this bigger buck didn't come right back through where he had come from, and here I am fiddling with my dadgum phone. You idiot!, I though to myself, be ready!

I eased the hammer back and trained the .44 on the clearing for what seemed like a long time, but I'm sure it was only a couple minutes. Lucky me, here he comes again. And this time he stopped long enough to freshen up a scrape giving me ample time to place a shot. He jumped straight up at the shot and made about two bounds before piling up right there.

The Hornady bullet performed admirably. The deer was quartering towards me and I hit him right in the near shoulder. Bullet trashed the lungs and exited in front of the rear leg. This was not a real big deer but it looked like the bullet was about out of steam when it exited as the exit hole was smaller than the entrance. The entrance was huge though because the shoulder bones kind of blew up.

Got to get back to cutting meat.

I feel so sorry for you having to shorten your hunt. At least you had a carry handle on your rifle so you could get out of there with that unfortunate burden.

  Dang, but that's a nice buck.
Sincerely,

Hobie

But EEK, it's got a scope on it - and a crossbolt safety. I heard those things make the guns not work right any more...

Maybe the buck didn't know that, though...

What a great kill! And not JUST a really nice buck, but a dandy buck taken with a .44!

Woooohoooo!

You have your rifle set up like one of my CB's that I take a lot of game with. What load did you take the buck with?

Hornady 240 gr. XTP, 24.0 gr. H110. It does about 1750 fps from my Marlin, and 1320 fps from my S&W 629. Very accurate load in both guns.

My 1894 will be going out next weekend after pigs and coyotes.

It'll be a backup to my AR, but if it's needed, 240g JSP's will get it done.
