Which 357 levergun?
OK,
I've got my bro convinved he needs a 357 levergun.
Got him to handle a Win Trapper (16.5 barrel), a 20 and 24 inch Marlins (44s).
I have no experience with 1892s and know Nate makes some good ones.
So the question is which 357 levergun with a 24 inch barrel do you recommend?

+1, love my NKJ '92 in .357. it is my primary weapon for many reasons. Can't imagine not having it around. Thats saying a lot for me.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
The 92 was designed for "pistol length" cartridges. The 94 wasn't. IMO tweaking a long-actin 94 to feed/time a short pistol cartridge is asking for troubles, someday, somewhen.
Buy a Rossi... and have NKJ slick it up. But buy a 92 regardless.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
I only have one Rossi , a.45, but I own several Marlin 1894`s and my .357 24" is just plain sweet. Cant imagine a rifle I would rather have in that caliber except maybe an Uberti 73.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes so it`s up to the owner to make the final decision.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
A 24" M92 from Steve appeals to me much more than a 24" Marlin 1894. I have 3 1894s and love them, but the long barrel doesn't have a full-length mag tube. Too much of a good thing to me. I like light and lively.Tycer wrote:One of Nate's slicked up 92's

I have a Rossi 92 & a Browning B-92. If you can find a B92, it is far superior to the Rossi.
The Brownings are out there, ya just have to look.
I like both, the Browning is my favorite.
If you think a Rossi is like butter, slicked up. Well a Browning is like glass.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
+1 on the Rossi. I have the Browning as well and have nothing but good (great) things to say about the B92, but 1) last I knew they didn't make 'em in 24 and 2) there's nothing wrong with a Rossi--especially at 1/3 to 1/2 the price and 10x the availability. Speaking of 24", are you sure you don't want to re-think? Not a light gun at that length. I've got a .44M/92 in a 24" octagonal; and while that construction no doubt exaccerbates, even with the much bigger hole it's still no lightweight.

He tried the 16, 20, 24 barrels on a few rifles and liked the 24 best

Re: Which 357 levergun?
My Rossi 92 20" & B92 20" will out shoot any 24" Rifle they are 44's not .357's. They have and will continue to do so.
We use them in long range CAS/SASS pistol caliber competition and beat out many 24" Marlins, 92's & 73's.
Most powder is burned in the first 20" of barrel length.
I have one 30-30 load that chronographs faster in a 20" barrel than a 26". Is more accurate also.
Now Black Powder, well it just might be another story.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
Get a Model 92 of some sort. With or without NKJ custom touches.
I have a Rossi M-92 SRC and love it.
Any M-92 is a stronger action than the Winchester or Marlin M-94 actions, and IMO slicker handling.

Correct me if I’m wrong. I was under the impression that the
optimal ballistic barrel length for the .357 mag. is 18” to 20” in length.

Ain't got a dog in this fight,... .357 was never my thing. But, are you sure your rifle out shot those others? Or, did you out shoot the other shooters?

Actually 16" seems to be optimum.

Re: Which 357 levergun?
The trouble with the Rossi Carbines, is that you can't hardly find a used on, nobody wants to give them up. I've got a Trapper in .45 Colt, a 20" Carbine in .45 Colt, and a 20" Carbine in .357 mag, and won't part with any of them. Self defense, close in hunting, or just plinking, they're great for the price.
We'll be remembered for what we've done, not what we have.

Not bad-mouthing the Rossi's but I have to agree with this. Mine just came back home for the third time, never leaving again.

Marlin Cowboy, which is 24" and octagonal barrel. I have a 45 Colt version and its a pip. I also have the standard 94 CS and its also a great and handy carbine.
And its the best looking one IMHO:

Nothing wrong with the Rossi - especially if worked on my Steve.
However, if you're interested in speed shooting, the Marlin has the shortest throw available. That's why its the darling of the CAS crowd. Those that are interested in the fastest times that is. I won't say gamers cause theres more to being a gamer than a fast throw on the levergun....

Re: Which 357 levergun?
I have a 24" Oct barrel Rossi .357 and a 1894 Marlin 44 mag . I love the .44 , it's finished better , looks good enough for me to wanna keep in the safe and its accurate to boot . Off topic but I appreciate the extra power of the .44 cause sometimes there is no substitute but I just keep picking up the Ugly Duckling Rossi . The extra weight over the Marlin does not bother me after hours walking in the field , I use a sling . It hangs better on the Target when shooting offhand and is mighty accurate over a bench . So what about the looong lever throw , just prolongs the pleasure of that wonderfull slick action , it fires fast enough for me to get a number of seldom needed follow up shot's on game , the .357 is dirt cheap to shoot . I guess if a Browning .357 M92 come along I might think it's a nice rifle but give me my Ugly Duckling .

Re: Which 357 levergun?
I own Winchesters and Marlins, 94s and 1894s, 71s and 1895s, Big Bores and boring, and I like them all. But, the one that answers the call is a little old Marlin 1894 .357 Magnum with a 20" barrel and full magazine tube. It's an older one without a safety, but the ones with safeties are no worse or better. I've stuck with my Marlin because it shoots everything well enough to hit with and can put jacketed bullets right where I want them out to 100 yards. My has peep sight attached, but I've had 'em with scopes and opens as well. Being able to easily mount a scope is a good option. I'm not terribly careful when hunting and sometimes my carbine gets dirty; so the easy tear down and assembly to clean it is also a good option. I've owned them with a straight stock and with a pistol grip stock, and will eventually buy another pistol gripped one; it gives me a bit more control and puts my sore wrists in a more natural position, and that's a good option. I use my carbine as a mono-pod to rest my binoculars on while sitting to glass a canyon or opening; that 20" barrel is just right for that application. And it is just the right balance of maximum velocity extraction, magazine capacity, handiness, and steady muzzle hold. And I might add this one other thing, it has never been to the shop for repair or part replacement. I works and works every time. I like mine, and certainly recommend it.

Talked with bro today.
Looks like he will take 1/2 day off on Wednesday, Veterans Day, and bring along
Katie his daughter (this is the one I bought a Savage MKII LH) and a friend of ours
who spent alot of time with us at the range on the men's retreat last month.
So... if he gets a 357, I assume Katie would use it coyote hunting, any good varmint loads for it?
