I'm almost feeling like a traitor of sorts since I've been playing more with shotguns and deer slugs over the last few months than leverguns. Additionally, I plan to field my mossberg 835 slug gun this deer season in lieu of my Marlins
Now, if someone made a lever action dedicated slug gun, I wouldn't have to feel guilty
Jason it was the Ithacha Model 66 RS Buck Buster.......22" with rifle sights. I have only seen it in 20 gauge but I believe it also came in 12 gauge.....

Did it have a rifled barrel?
My mossberg seems to be a pretty good slug gun, but there are a couple flaws in my opinion.
1. It's a very bulky gun that isn't comfortable to carry. It was clearly designed to be a sitting gun.
Don't know if it's got a rifleled barrel or not. Doesn't matter. There are some very accurate 12ga, smooth bore, slug, shotguns around that can do the job.
Jason the Gun Doctor in Longview, Texas has a real sure enough Winchester 1887 for sale on consignment. Looked at it last week but don't remember how much he was asking.....

2. The pump rattles
WellSir, a 12ga Rifle ( .729 Caliber ) is quite likely to be bulky, and I've never heard a pump that didn't rattle. You might find something smaller/lighter in a auto shotty......

Granted that a 12 ga is going to inevitably have some mass, but the 835 turkey/slug combo I have isn't nearly as handy feeling as an 870. Just my opinion, anyway. If I ever have a decent paying job again, I might go with an H&R for days on the stand, and as you suggested, some kind of short barreled auto for brush busting.

I've read that. Especially at close ranges like those I usually find myself hunting at. I can't experiment with slugs for smooth bores as my only 12 ga is overbored and the manual said not to fire slugs through it.
There is a gun auction Nov 8th in Larned Kansas that has 2 or 3 1887 lever shotguns for sale. At least one of them is in 10ga. That should kill a deer just fine!
I do know of guys that take a Marlin .410 shotgun, rebarrel it to have a rifled boar and make their own slugs to shoot in them. As I understand it they shoot like a .45-70 which of course is very good on deer.

1887 Winchester replicas around now can fire 12ga slugs. Coyote Cap makes some interesting 1887s using norincos as a base.
EDIT: I see I am not the first to offer up the '87 as a solution. I like the idea about fitting it with a rifled choke tube.

Kinda the long way around the barn, ain't it...?
But then, the .444 Marlin is just a step-child of the all-brass .410 case anyway...

got a 1887 copy. put a rear stickon sight on it . with cheapo slugs, it's good to 50 yards. rifled choke tube sounds interesting, but, this combo works well enough for what i use it for.

Seen them, but not one with rifle sights. Should be simple enough to install sights.
