Let this guy walk this morning.!

Post by deerwhacker444 »

Well, I'll probably be cursing myself at the end of the season, but I let this guy walk this morning. A 1.5 year old 4pt busted down to a 3 pt.

It sure would have been fun to take him with my bow, but he was just a tad to little. Muzzleloading season starts tomorrow so maybe I'll get a nicer one at my other spot.

You can see my right leg (click the photo) on the top of the stand, he was close. My camera took the pic as he was walking by nosing around, sure was fun to watch for a few minutes.

You are the one that saw him, But he sure looks fat and round to me.

Might have been a cull buck. He's big for such a small rack.

Well the rule of thumb I use when looking at animals is
" would I be happy on the last day of the season with that buck/bull/whatever?" If I would be happy on the last day I usually pull the trigger.

Nice try Andy. Here's what he very cleverly edited out of his photo:

He's a pretty nice looking buck even if he doesn't have much of a rack. Don't sweat it, you'll see more.

Gorgeous stand site though.

Gee, wish I could take 1/2 a day off to hunt during the week...

That is close. You'll get another shot. I'd of probably let him walk too.

Well, I don't know, as Jack O'conor used to say, it still depends on my bloodpressure at the time. I might have shot him for a cull, if I still had another tag, or if it was late in the season, espacally if I hadn't shot anything in a while. But I also might have let him walk, and I definately would have let him walk, if it was a pay hunt.

thanks for sharing. in the area I hunt, has to have three points on one side. And if you don't shoot the legal buck, someone else will. I have to find me some private land to own.

Antler soup? Never heard the Jack O'Connor BP quote but I agree with it. I have let many walk with larger antlers but sometimes the situation or shot offered will seal the deal for me. I tend to hunt with OS of late and truly enjoy a perfect neck shot at a distance. I admire a hunter who can let one pass.

Here in Massachusetts or Connecticut I would not let that walk by unless a shot did not present itself. Venison is very hard to get.
