OT: 4 Horned Black Sheep - bulletproof

Post by 86er »

I am starting to think the Devil himself is alive and well in this 4 horned sheep. First of all it showed up out of nowhere inside the high fence. It is the only all black short haired 4 horn anyone has ever heard of. On Sept 12th Chris Troskie shot it with a 45 Colt and it left a blood trail for over 100 yards but disappeared. A week later it showed up out of nowhere again. It got shot with a 303 British, and upon being hit bucked up and ran. It has been unaccounted for since. On October 12th it was seen again. On October 13th I shot it with a 375 double rifle, hitting it in the front above the leg. The hit knocked it's front legs out from under it and its face hit the mud. Then it got up and trotted off. No blood, no sheep. We watched for vultures for the next two days. Nothing. No dead sheep - no live sheep anywhere with over 12 hours and 3 men separately looking. Maybe it will show up again, and if shot 7 more times it will die on the 7th shot, having used up 9 lives. I can't explain it.....

Awesome, I sometimes wonder if they are just so dumb or something like that that just keeps them going.
I've shot sheep and they will just walk off and start grazing just before they topple over.
Never forget a 243W and 222 shooting a small group side by side, the 222 killed them quicker and they were in full wool

Joe,

When you finally get that guy we really need to see some pics. Four horned all black sheep. Sounds very interesting.

Reminds me of an old hereford cow we shot when I was around 11. She had cancer in her eye so we decided to put her down. Two shots to the head with a SMLE in 303 at PBR and she was down... About 30 minutes later I rode by the spot where we shot her and NO COW. I decided that if she was tough enough to wander off after being hit in the head twice, I didn't really want to find her.

Let us know if that sheep turns up. I know I can't wait to find out what finally takes it down.

Wow. What kind of sheep is it, Joe. Definitely sounds like it has nine lives.

Perhaps you would like me to come take care of it with my little 6.5 Swede? It worked quite handily on my 4-horn... One Shot, One Kill

Those are the domestic variety - 86er's are the wild kind - just look at the eyes on mine  ;) Why I had to shoot quick to avoid the charge and resultant goring :P

Mine was quite wary and gave us a merry chase and had accomplises that kept blocking and getting behind him. I finally had an opportunity to take a shot at about 75 yards and he ran about 20 and layed down. The 129 gr. Hornady Interlok did its usual great job. Broadside shot through the lungs just behind the heart - I was aiming square at the heart... but it worked nonetheless.

Thanks, there is a thread here somewhere all about it... but I'll give you quick run-down.

I would never take a 94 Swede (like this) in original config and sporter it - I found this one in the local shop - it had been altered beyond return and had several problems. The full-length mannlicher stock was badly warped at the muzzle end, the initial inletting was too shallow and there was a gap between the bottom plate and the reciever, so it didn't feed properly. The safety was original and required a too-tall mount - the mount bases were stripped out and loose.... but, it was otherwise in good shape, so I bought it.

I worked on it over a couple years - lopped the stock muzzle-end off, sanded the flaired pistol grip cap end, removed the cheek peice (sanded off), took the old red-line rubber buttpad off and replaced with a steel one that I fabricated, deepened the inletting, glass-bedded the action, free-floated the barrel, installed a buehler safety, retapped and drilled the sight bases to the next size up..... intalled new bases and the scope you see - and upgraded the rings after I shot that pic... oh, and installed the sling swivels. Oh, and replaced the trigger with a rifle basix trigger...

I think thats all! :P

Here's what the scope mount/rings look now:

And here's the buttplate that I made and fitted:

Its a little honey now and its basically my creation too which makes it special to me.

She only throws the 129 grain bullets about 2500-2600 fps but that's proven to be plenty enough.

Where can he go? He's inside a fence. Give him a sporting chance and open at least one gate.
