MOVIES - Looking for an adventure/western
I'm looking for a movie that will have a lot of action with the theme of traveling. Something like a long search for treasure or a long cattle drive. Way out in wild wild open country.
Preferably with lever guns and single actions in it. And not too modern if at all.
Any body got any suggestions?
Joe

Re: OT?: Looking for an adventure/western movie
Have The Cowboys, Red River and Lonesome Dove.
Want something more, something I haven't seen, or at least seen for a very long time. Something more on the scope of an epic drama rather than just a movie.
I've seen something like this eons ago when I was kid in AZ. They had the Saturday matinee and they'd play some of the really good movies.
It's just been soo very long ago.

"The Professionals"
Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster.
Another movie I really liked was "Persuit of Honor" with Don Johnson of all people.
I'm sure you've seen "Hildalgo", Vigo Mortensen (sp). Another good adventure.
I'm sure I'll think of some more.

Re: OT?: Looking for an adventure/western movie
There is one that I can remember only tiny parts of. The main character is forced by bandits to help them locate a treasure in the mountains. There is a female character and at the end they barely get out before the avalanche buries everything. Seems like the actor is ......................? I can't remember the name. Tall, dark hair, deep voice. I can picture his face, but can't remember his name ...... arrrrghhh!
I've looked up The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and this is not the movie.

Yep, I just looked it up on IMDB. I thought it was an older movie, but it came out in 1969. Still, I just put it on my list.BigSky56 wrote:Joe, thats Mackenna's Gold all star cast good flick. danny
There are several other western types in Gregory Peck's list that might also be worth looking for.

That was a good movie!
I wish somebody would make a movie about Roy Andrews Chapman, and him using his '99 250-3000 to good use

2 Movies I've yet to see on this list are: "The Mountain Men" with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith and "Johnson County War" with Tom Berenger. Not much for cows in any of em but a couple of my favorites. Come to thing of it, I don't know if I've ever seen "The Mountain Men" referenced here at LeverGuns. Also toss in a vote for "The Tin Star" with Henry Fonda.

Did anyone mention "Valdez is Coming" yet? Think of it as a one-man "Wild Bunch."
Someone mentioned Roy Chapman Andrews; well they did do movies inspired by his life: Indiana Jones. No lever rifles, though, that I can recall, and nobody can call those Westerns.

i can't believe that no one mentioned Whispering "Smith (1948) or Sasklatchewan (1954), or iron Mistress (1052) all starring Alan Ladd.
For that matter, I don't recall seeing mention of a couple of old favorites such as McClintock, Sons of Kate ?Elder, Fort AApache, Rio Grande, She Wore a yellow Ribbon, , The Undefeated, El Dorado < horse Soldiers and my very favorite John Wayne movie (though it ain't a western or a war flick, it has one of the best fight secquences of all time) The Quiet man.

Don't think I've seen "Big Jake" mentioned yet. John Wayne and Richard Boone.
"Who are you?" "Jacob McCandles" "I thought you was dead." "Not hardly."

by your description, Broken Trail, has a little bit of everything in it.

Re: OT?: Looking for an adventure/western movie
Many superb Westerns have been mentioned. But it seems to me that the beautiful 1978 mini-series “Centennial” is about as “epic” as a Western can be. At about 21 hours in length, it certainly fits the “time wise” criterion.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076993/
It is available on DVD. The 6-DVD set is a true bargain at $22.49 on Amazon, and the quality is high.
http://www.amazon.com/Centennial-Comple ... 357&sr=8-1
Both versions of “Cimarron” (1931, starring Richard Dix, and 1960, starring Glenn Ford) are epic Western sagas. I think the former is the best, but the latter is good, too, and it has an excellent music score by Franz Waxman.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053715/
William Wyler’s “The Big Country” has been mentioned; it is a wonderful, lengthy epic with one of the greatest Western music scores ever composed, by Jerome Moross.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051411/
The Spencer Tracy/Katherine Hepburn Western “The Sea of Grass” is rather an epic.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039806/
Speaking of Miss Hepburn, her Western with John Wayne, “Rooster Cogburn”, although not quite an epic, seems to fit in with the criteria mentioned.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073636/
One epic Western that involves travel, but which might not be thought of in the context of the thread topic, is John Ford’s magnificent “Cheyenne Autumn”, but I don’t think it could be considered an adventure.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057940/
“How the West was Won”, another true epic saga—which was spectacular in the original Cinerama presentation—has already been mentioned.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
