30 - 30 Hunters: 150 or 170 ?

Post by Arminius »

:?: 150 or 170 grs Bullets are better for hunting, kill quicker, have more penetration ( well, that will be 170´s most likely ) or are more accurate??

I can´t decide .. and I have not so much hunting opportunity and time to find out myself!

Thanks, Hermann

P.S.: will be used from 20" Win 94´2

you gun will tell you what it likes best. As far as what works better on deer sized game, I can't tell a difference.

They both work. Not much difference between them really. The 150's tend to expand a bit more and penetrate a bit less - the 170's the opposite.

I usually go with the 170 Speer in handloads.

I use the 170gr bullets. If you handload, 30grs of IMR-3031 behind a 170gr bullet makes a good all around load for deer, elk, and antelope along with smaller game too. When I use factory ammo I use 170gr Winchester Super X Soft Points and sometimes 170gr Winchester Super X Silver Tips.

My winchesters prefer the 150's, and have accounted for antelope, muledeer, whitetail and elk.
The Marlin shoots best with 170's and has been used on antelope and elk.
Try some of each see which your rifle shoots best, then take that load hunting.
The speer bullets are my favorite for reloading.

I have found the 150 is adequate for my needs, coyote, deer & target shooting. AND, most importanly, my two favorite rifles like 'em also. YMMV.

I keep mine sighted in with 170s......Bear are on the menu as well as deer in these parts and tho I might be wrong, I trust the heavier boolits with bear. Having said that, I usually have the 45-70 with me.

I never noticed a single difference between the two weights on deer, don't see a reason to get to fussed over 20grn.

The Old Timers down my way always prefered the 170 Silver Tip or Core-Lokt and I just picked that up and have never seen a reason to change.

Thanks for sharing that, Don. I was wondering if the Win's 1:12 twist was better for 150's and the Marlin's 1:10 was better for 170's.

:D 170's for my two 30-30's. (Model 94 "Ugly Duck" and 336 Marlin) Most of my family uses 170's , for whatever they're after. They chose whichever shoots the best. I prefer Remington 170 CoreLokt factory ammo in mine. They shoot better in my 2 levers. My brother has an H&R single shot that prefers 150 Wichester Silvertips....so that's what he uses. Hope it helps....Tom

I70 Federals shoot the best in mine, then 170 Power Points.

I've taken white tail with bullets as light as 125 Gr.

My Savage 99 likes the heavier bullets. Seriously doubt the deer will know the diference
between the two as long as they are put in the right spot.

I haven't hit any game with the 30-30, but at the range I thought the 170's dropped quite a bit (Remington factory) compared to the 150's. The 170's reminded me of 35 Rem.

Since the idea is to have a flat-shooting rifle, I went with the 150's. Then the state of CA made the choice for me (150 grain Barnes copper).

I tend to like the 150s if there is a chance that I may need to shoot beyond 150 yrds. Other than that the 170s get the nod. My gun (336 Marlin) shots both to near the same point of aim. The 170s are about 2-3" lower at 100 yrds. I prefer the REM. Corelokts and then Win PP.

I agree with horsesoldier3---but if you handload for 30-30, the choice between Corelocts and Powerpoints has been pretty much made for you by Remington and Winchester. Coreloct components are available in both 170 and 150 grain, but if you want component Winnie Powerpoints, it seems like all that's available for 30-30 flatnose is 150's. No matter--both are good, have stood the test of time, and have dropped way more game--big, small and otherwise--than anyone would take the time to count. A few years ago I was in my favorite gunshop--a place on a farm, way off the beaten path. A salesman (an obvious city feller) walked in to promote some newly designed PMC 30-30 ammo. The owner stopped him short, saying (paraphrased) "I can't use that stuff. My 30-30 people never buy exotic ammo". That store may be remote, but they sell lots of different products to lots of people nonetheless. It would seem that the Corelocts and Powerpoints still do the trick for most 30-30 people--and always have.

PMC sells lead bullet ammo for .30-30's, too. I've seen people try to run those in Marlins and they start flinging bullets out in all sorts of directions.
