O T: scattergun upgrade

Post by m.wun »

Been looking for a new shotgun and really like the feel of the Benelli field M2.
Anybody have any gripes with these??I have always shot a 870 wingmaster
and a 870 express.I really want a faster, lighter gun and they feel right in my hands.
This 870 express I have is rougher than a cobb, the only reason I bought it
was that I have an old non vent rib wingmaster(far better) that is mod. choke,
and some sizable cracks in the comb.I love that gun but shes tired.Barretas and
Brownings are sweet too!

My brother in law has a Benelli Montefeltro that we have both shot a lot, and it is a good shooting, good working gun.

I have read good write ups on the Browning Gold, but I have also heard from several actual owners that seemed to have some troubles with them after a while. I personally don't much care for them myself, but then again, I am old school and the A5 is still my gun of choice.

If you want a sweet handling gun, get a Winchester 23 side by side, I own two of them, and they have been shot extensively, by me, and they shoot very well. Unforunately, starting prices for them, when you can find them is around $2,000.00 and up.

A Browning Citori Lightening can be a very nice handling gun, espacally the Lightening Feather. It's a short straight gripped gun, but it's about the fastest gun I have ever used for jump shooting. Of course you are looking at around 2 grand again, but worth it, and a better gun then such guns as the Ruger Red Label, as far as I am concerned.

I have been using a Benelli Montefeltro(same action as the M2) for over 10 years as my primary shotgun. With the 24" tube, it's light, swings fast and kicks light. Lots of people say the gas autos kick less but I've never noticed much difference. I've shot most of the other Benellis out there as well as most of the gas guns or for that matter most shotguns, period, guiding (including some multimillionaire) pheasant hunters has had its perks and I still think it is the perfect choice for me. Mine has been stone axe reliable with every shell, light or heavy during those last 10 years as well.

I personally never liked the feel of the M2 but that was mostly the forearm just not feeling right for me.

I'm not a big fan of the Berretta gas guns as I've had to troubleshoot too many of them for function problems. Most were a cleaning issue but it's a problem I've never had with the Benelli recoil system, though the 3 1/2" guns can get fussy with light loads. There's a reason the Benelli action design is being copied by so many companies.

I've owned an 870 that I've had since grade school and it's a good gun but it doesn't get out much anymore.

I've always been a double-gun or pump-gun fan. But I shot a Benelli semi-auto one afternoon and was highly impressed. IIRC, it was either a Montefeltro or a Black Eagle. It handled better than any semi-auto I've eveer held in my hands, and the follow up shots were faster than any other I've used.

If I ever get in the market for a semi-automatic shotgun, I'll be looking at a Benelli.

I'm a double gun (even a single) for hunting and a pump for defense kinda guy. I do prefer the pump for slug use.

The Remington Express guns are rough but they do smooth out with use. I'd also like to note that you can get that old 870 a new stock...

The main thing is that if you like it and it feels right for you, you should get it. Shotguns must feel right for you as an individual.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Its pretty hard to go from a slick wingmaster to a express.I even thought of getting another
wingmaster or even the Benelli nova pump.

The Benelli is a great gun, but can be load sensitive. I have to shoot full power shotshells in mine to 100% function...no reduced recoil. However, you can't go wrong with an 870. 'Course, I am kinda prejudiced cuz I use one at work. As a defensive arm, you have to go far to beat it. It even works in the hunting fields, too!!
