Anyone ever see chrome barrel bands on a model 94?

Post by RugerRedhawk »

Ok, I have an old model 94, and for some unknown reason it has what appear to be 'chrome' barrel bands. It is not ideal for hunting, and also looks incredibly out of place on this gun.

Pete44ru was nice enough to send me a nice blued front band, I realized I need to try and track down a rear band too. Just curious if anyone has an clue as to where the heck these could have came from? They are silver colored on the inside and out so I don't think it's just that somebody polished them excessively or anything.

Ok, that sounds more likely, it is shiny, but I honestly don't know the material used. If they are nickel then I would be able to use perma blue or some similar product on them right? It does say 'nickel steel' on the barrel, was any other part of the gun shiny like this at one point?? I think the butt plate is.

NO, I MEAN TO SAY THEY'RE NICKLE PLATED. NOTHING WILL COLOR THEM UNLESS YOU USE BROWNELLS SPRAY PAINT FOR ALUMINUM PARTS. THIS PAINT WORKS VERY WELL INDEED.
NICKLE STEEL IS AN ALLOY AND THAT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME.

Maybe a "special-order" piece...?

Get a letter on that puppy, before you make any drastic changes, Pard.

Hmmm... does winchester do this? I can't find anything on their site, I see the cody firearms museum offers a service like this for a $60 fee.

The Cody Firearms Museum is THE official site for Winchester Letters.

It's $60 well spent.

Ok thanks, Perhaps I'll get one at some point, but deer season is approaching and I'd prefer a bit less 'bling' in the woods. ;)

One wrap of camo tape over the offending bling, and you're good to go...

Don't see a problem, myself.

IIRC, Cody can only "letter" a Winchester mdl 94 up to about serial number 38X,XXX. Now, i've never SEEN an old Winchester 94 with either nickel plated bands unless the entire gun was done so. And nickel plating wears at just a slower rate than bluing.... given the state of that bluing, I'd expect more wear on those bands. I suspect you have a "ifixeditmyself" gun.

That was my inclination as well. thanks for the replies, hope to put a deer down with this rifle this year. It's the only rifle I can shoot well with iron sights, and it's exceptionally light to carry so that it is another plus.

RugerRedhawk,

I'd bet a box of primers that is a "Bubba'd" carbine. Look at the bottom of the barrel just forward of the front sight. If there is a tiny notch running crosswise then the magazine tube has been shortened. I'd bet it has.

If so then a new tube, spring and bands will make it right.

IMHO, the mag tube looks like it's a non-standard length - IOW, a home-grown chop job - which makes the brightwork barrel bands also suspect IMO.

ANY blued M94 forend barrel band should fit the wood, so if you can locate one and put it together with the blued front band you have, you should be good to go, for hunting.
