Puma92 44mag and skinner sights?

Post by leveractionjunkie »

Hello Levergunners

I've got a Puma 92 in 44mag that constantly shoots high with full house loads, so I was gonna file the front sight down a bit. But then I got to thinking I don't really like these sights and noticed Skinner Sights is offering a barrel mounted peep now so thought that might be pretty neat to try. I have one of Tim's receiver peeps on my Marlin 1894c and really like the system and find it very accurate. Since this is where I found out about Tim's sights and the Puma's I figured I would check in here and see if anybody here's tried it out? If not, what sight combinations have you guys used on these rifles?

Thanks for any help you guys can give, I appreciate it. I really gotta keep visiting this sight more often, as it seems I have missed out on some good stuff. I think it might take some time to catch up on things.

A peep sight should properly be looked through (not AT) without actually seeing it, and placing the front sight on target.

IMHO, a barrel-mounted peep is too far from the user's eye to use in the manner they were designed - a barrel-mounted peep being a "drop-in" solution that many folks, unused to peeps, seem to desire.

Dr. Tim made me a special order Lo-Pro @ no extra charge - which I mounted on the bolt, replacing the safety - but fellow levergunner/M92 gunsmith Steve/Kiowa (see www.stevesgunz.com ) also makes something similar.

Personally I like the tang sight , I feel the nearer the sight is to your eye it is the better your sight picture is and more accurate it is ...... I made the this sight on my SASS/CAS gun .

Lots of cool sight options these days. I won't re-post all the pics but here's a link to lots of aperture sighting options I posted. I don't have the 'Skinner' sights, but probably will try one someday. Anyway, if you want to see what some of the others look like, this link has pics of some setups I've liked...

Like COSteve said if your rifle is shooting high you need a taller front sight, not a lower one.

Many folks love the tang sights, but I can't shoot with them. I tend to crawl up on the stock so the tang sights are too close to my face. Also there is no room for my hand to grasp the stock. I've tried the thumb on the side hold and I can't get enough control like that.
Also I just don't like that stalk sticking up into space, it looks really fragile to me. Probably isn't, but that's what I see.

The Skinner barrel peep, the one sold to fit on Winchester's factory barrel sight base, and the new weird looking one Marbles sells wont work for me either. The aperture is too far from my eyes. I can't really look through it as it's not close enough.

So.....since this is not the late 1800s or early 1900s I mount side mounted receiver sights on my lever guns. They may not be CAS legal, may not have the classic appearance, but they do have great adjustability for both elevation and windage and are very durable. They are also at just the right distance for me to see through and get a really nice sight picture.
