on topic, met a fella today, whoo boy

Post by pokey »

i try not to deal with the public if i can help it, today i met an older
gentleman and i'm glad i did. that is an unusual comment for me.

this guy is easy to get along with, restores old harleys, has more
old guns than anybody i know, and is 84 years old. when i saw an
empty rifle stock in his garage, i made a comment, and away we went.

he opened one safe, there were rifles 10 across and 5 deep, win. 92s,
marlin 94s, stevens 22s, shot guns of many makes, like browning a-5s
and rem 870s. levers, bolts, slides and single shots. and then on the top
shelves were oak presentation boxes full of like new s&w revolvers.
my eyes bugged out of my head, i was realing, could not catch my breath.

well then we needed to go to another room in another part of his house,
passed his bedroom and there were two gun cabinets on either side of
his dresser. ok so we went to his office with the comp. and there is his
reloading stuff, oh my goodness what a pile.

as we went down the hall there was a door that was closed and locked,
he says wait here, goes to get the key, bet you can't guess what was in that
room? yup more guns. of course what caught my eye were the levers. first win 94s
a few 30wcf, one i liked alot had a hard rubber but pad w/the little inlet peak at
the top, 25-35s and others, savage 99s, 22hi-powers, and a 99 w/oct barrel in
25-35. there were lots of others too, bolties galore, and shot guns doubles and
pumps.

so then he says, how he's getting old and doesn't want to leave a mess for
his kids. he is planning to start selling his stuff. catalog and sell all but the
keepers he won't part with. now i'm starting to sweat. i told him he better
get an appraisal, maybe two or three. i also suggested on line auctions but
he doesn't do computers even though he has one. his son in law takes care
of that, i guess. along with what i saw he claims to have more guns scattered
over three states[his words]. there was at least one other safe i did not look
in so i have no trouble believing him.

i left him my card, told him to call me when and if. i don't think i have a big
enough bankroll for this game, but i sure would like to see how he makes out.

boy this is a long post, but this doesn't happen to me.
the wife would have a heart attack if i told her what i am thinking,
so just needed to unload.

thanks for listening, pokey

pokey boy I would say that maybe the Lord just wanted to bless you today and let you meet that old gentleman and see some fine weapons. I'll bet he don't do that for just everyone that comes along to his home.

+1

I am always grateful when I meet someone so blessed. Not for my sake, but for theirs.

It's darn hard, but I try to keep the 10th Commandment in mind.

Sounds like my kind of man - he has more rifles than I do but I think I have more handguns and I'm only 83. My bike is a BMW -

But, I can assure you, I don't worry about what happens to my guns when I fail to pass the "wake-up" test and I'm gonna keep them until that days comes. My wife understands - I sold a gun back in 1940 and have regretted it ever since and will never do that again.

HA HA HA!!!!!! Well, I am only 32 and have been married for 5 years but my wife is beginning to understand. I sold my very trusty carry gun right before we were married because we needed the money, and she was the first one to say she missed that thing! There is no more selling of guns out of my house!!!

If you have the time, he may be interested in you helping him sell a few of them on the net. If he agrees, take some pictures of a couple he wants to sell and list them for him. Make it clear in the ad that they are not yours and you are selling for a friend.
If your are successful he might give you a percentage of the sale for your effort. 15% is fair. Do it for free the first time or two so he can be at ease with you. Neither of you have anything to lose, you might make a great friend, and who knows, pick up a gun or two in lieu of a fee. And it costs you nothing but some time and a little homework on pricing.
If he isn't interested, you still have had a unique experience, that most of us rarely ever have.
I would be willing to help you any way I can.

Having known several "gun blessed" people......there's a few out there. :)

I knew a guy who had 85 guns when he died. Most nothing particularly spectacular, a good solid collection of milsurps, some .44 handguns, etc and some other odds and ends. All of his kids grew up shooting but none were "gun guys". His son in law ended up inheriting the majority of the collection. Being in CA during the ban, with a spectacular amount of preban stuff......I felt happy for him. Too bad I wasn't in the will! :D

I've bought and sold quite a few guns in about a decade and won't sell any more unless there's multiples of one, or it doesn't fill a specific role, etc. My wife understands. (Being a shooter).

no sir. :o

i've been known to sell/trade pieces, but i really like that one.

the cash i could make off that would not make a drop in the bucket
for the amount of stuff i saw.

when you're hunting and see so many deer you can't decide which to shoot so they
all get away, it's called embarrassment of riches.

i had a similar feeling when seeing all his stuff. i've been trying to figure just how
many guns i saw. best estimate maybe 250/300.

i'd have to sell the house.

I see one old guy at one of the local gunshops that ALWAYS has the back of his Jeep wagoneer FULL of rifle cases. If he wasn't so darned loony, I'd have to talk with him for a while and fondle 'em. From what I hear, he's retired and just buys guns whenever he finds a good deal.

That is a great line!
