Drat!!! Foiled again in my Ruger No.1 search

Post by stew71 »

Stopped by my favorite local gunshop yesterday. I heard through the grapevine that they had a scoped Ruger No. 1 from an estate sale sitting on the shelf. My heart went all pitter-patter as I walked through the front door, strolled oh-so-casually to the counter, spied that really nice looking Ruger.....and then.....whump. My heart sank to the floor as I saw the tag....270 Weatherby Magnum.

Drat....no wonder it's sat on the shelf. I'm sure the 270WM is a great round...but it's way more than I would ever need. And at $55 per 20 rounds.....Yikes...Maybe if I went after some Rocky Mountain elk...but then I have my 30-06 for that.

Ahhhhh well. The search continues....somewhere there is a purdy No.1 in .257 Bob, 7x57, 30-06, or even .270 Win...just waiting for a new home.

I dunno. Would any of you guys out there buy a really nice rifle for a good price, even though it's not quite the caliber you're looking for? This one's going for $750 out the door because of the oddball caliber. The scope is a mid-level Leupold if I recall correctly.

What shop would that be, Stew? Not River City? :)

Nope... J & G over in Granite Bay on Barton Road. Love that place.

So many Browning A-5's....so little cash-on-hand....

[This one's going for $750 out the door because of the oddball caliber. The scope is a mid-level Leupold if I recall correctly.]

I would buy it.

Firstly, the .270WM can be easily handloaded to the more strenuous levels than weaker rifles can take/use - levels that most 7x57 #1 purchasers load their rifles to.
Your next biggest expenditure would be for some empty .270 WM brass to start off with (and/or dies).

Secondly, the "mid-level Leupold is worth at least $150 any day/time/where - making the true tag about $600.

Thirdly, you might be able to increase your cash flow by asking what the seller/dealer "thought" the scope was worth, then either offering those $$$ off the $750 or $500-$550 or so - whichever is less cash difference to you.

Fourthly, you can also offer/but say, $600-$650 for the package, then sell off the scope to reduce your cost - since reasonable/used Leupold scope sales are almost as easy as selling $5-bills for $1 each.

+1. I'm with Pete44ru on this one. You can handload it up or down to suit your needs. That is a round with some serious horsepower for a smallbore. Trajectory is extremely flat as well. Thanks, Tom

Yep, J&G is a nice shop. They have done a little work for me, but aren't Winchester gurus. They did have a couple of beat up 1886s at SKY HIGH prices a few years back. :)

Stew,

Yep, I'd buy it!! You can always load the 270WM to a lower power level.

I knew a fellow who had a Number One in 375 H&H Mag who shot 300 grain cast lead at 1800 fps for years on the local whitetail and feral hogs to great effect! :D

If you want one there's no need to wait, just check gunbroker there are a hundered listed for sale. Search around until you find the caliber, price, condition that you want.

That, or get your dealer to order one for you - you don't need to wait until one just happens to pop up....

Yeah I've seen plenty of those used No.1's for sale on Gunbroker. But I guess I'm sorta leery about buying a gun online. I have to hold it, feel it, etc. Plus that and the fact that many of the dealers and sellers on Gunbroker won't sell to California residents. Not that I blame them considering our anti-gun political climate in Sacramento.

But you all have good points about the 270WM. It does look like a hammer-of-God type of round. And I love reloading oddball calibers...and since it would be a hunting rifle, I won't need that much brass...and...and......

Well if I happen to wander by the shop soon and put down a deposit to hold it, you'll be the first to know...well after my wife of course.

I hear what your sayin.

I am selective about which sellers I'll buy from - they have to have really good ratings. Further, I want to see the description detail the important stuff like bore condition.

You can email them ahead and ask about the cali shipment. Their response time to your inquiry will also be telling.

I have yet to have any problems.

Good luck!

I do a good amount of buisness on Gunbroker both buying and selling !

So far I haven't had a bad deal .

However as to selling to CA I am sorry to say we don't . It just isn't worth the hassle one has to go thru to do it .

+2. It is always easier to download a certian cartridge, rather than hotload another. They usually tend to be more accurate too.

I would buy it, too. I have one of the early rifles in that caliber, and it's one of the most accurate rifles I've owned. It's also easy to reload, although the initial price of the Norma brass will set you back a few dollars. I use nothing but 150 grain Partitions and 7828. I started with this combination, and it proved so accurate and effective, that I've never fooled around with another load. It's what the .270 Winchester should have been, perhaps. I have killed a variety of game with it, up to moose. In fact, I've killed most of my moose with it, and none of them complained. My only beef is that it's a bit heavy, like all 1-Bs. Overbuilt, really.
