OT - Man Hospitalized Drilling Live Round

Guess he was lucky he wasn't trying to make a pendant out of a .557 Nito Express Cartridge. As Bugs would say, wot a maroon...

Man Hospitalized After Drilling through Live Round to Make Keychain Charm (link)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A 57-year-old man was treated for a serious hand wound Tuesday after Charleston Police say he tried to drill through a live round to make a keychain ornament.

It happened at about 1 p.m. at the man's home on the city's west side.

Sgt. Eric Hodges with the Charleston Police Department says the man was drilling through a .30-06 deer rifle round when he saw a spark and the ammunition exploded, causing serious injuries to his left hand.

Hodges says the powder charge inside the round had not been removed -- and the round was still live at the time.

The man did not immediately seek treatment, but consulted with his neighbor and eventually went to St. Francis Hospital a couple hours later. He is not expected to lose his hand, Hodges said.

No charges are going to be filed in the case, and Sgt. Hodges says the man's name is not going to be released.

That's a good one Jack!

Remember a year or so ago when the fellow killed himself trying to drill out the fuse or a War Between the States artillery shell?

Just wait until that bonehead finds his mortar round!!

Knowing that fellow, we are of a mind that something unusual happened. Of course, some of the forensics wasn't done as it wasn't considered cost effective. He obviously made a mistake but had a bit of experience in disarming CW ordnance.

Believe it or not, I had a 2nd or 3rd cousin (long since deceased) that my family always told of the time he came by some mil-surp ammo as a teenager. He couldn't get the bullets out with pliers and so got the brain storm that he could just melt the bullets out over the propane cook stove. He was holding the first one over the flame with pliers when it exploded and filled him with bits of brass. Believe it or not, he lived into his 40's or so when the semi he was riding in dropped over a precipice out in Colorado.

Yup, dumb and all that. I do have a question. In the report it was said that no charges would be filed. Like they were doing him a favor. Okay, lets say the world, judge, cops and prosicuteing DA hated his guts. What possible charges could be filed? We all know, NONE! There isnt a liveing person over 9 years old that hasnt done something dumb, even me. I was about 10 or 11 when I done similar. Dad didnt reload so I knew nothing about it. However I was curious as to what was in a shotgun shell. I was one of those kids that tore down everything even if it worked. Anyway I opened up the shell, took out the wads and bbs. Now ta git out da primer. Yup, a hammer and nail for a punch. The result was interesting! No, I didnt get hurt. My ears rang though.

It would be a stretch but I guess they could charge him with discharging live ammunition within the city limits if there was an ordinance against doing same. Usually there is a law against discharging a firearm within the city limits but who knows? It was in W. VA.

Similar situation, I just placed the muzzle of my BB gun against the primer and pulled the trigger to see what would happen. No injuries other than having to change my shorts...

You wanna talk about dumb stuff you do as a kid, my brother (who was on the ground with me on top of him) told me I wouldn't shoot him in the leg with a bb gun he would tell mom. Well last year at hunting camp I saw the tiny black area on his thigh Yep 33 years later and it's still in there. I am now a registered nurse and he's an attorney. Glad we made it. Tom
