Mossberg in general.

Post by mikld »

On an earlier post I asked about the Mossberg 464 lever. Not planning on buying, just wanna know. Got some good info. So, I went to Guns America to look-see and noticed Mossberg arms are usually inexpensive. I've never owned one so what is the forum's general impression of Mossberg firearms? Where are they made?

My only experience is with the 500 series shotguns made in the USA. I will never part with my 500. I've shot thousands of rounds through it in the past 35 years with nary a hitch. Trap, skeet, deer, duck, dove, rabbit.......
Kind regards,

A friend of mine was looking at the 590 I had. He said " Reminds me of my old Plymouth. Not much to look at
but it'll get you there"

Thought that pretty well sized 'em up.

cant beat a 500 shotgun... Mossberg builds a good line of utilitarian firearms in general. I still keep a 500 for ducks... if it goes in the drink I'm not out much... and it hits what it shoots at.

The new levergun has some warts... broken ejectors mostly
always press the "red" button--- it's worth the effort and the results can be fun

Mossberg is made right here in the States. Although I don't currently have any, I have owned them in the past and I would rate their quality as one of the best "meat and potatos guns" ever made, right along side of a Ruger.

Not fancy but their parts department don't get a lot of business like the Italian gun manufacturers get.---------------Sixgun

I overall like my Mossberg 464 lever, but it has been a love-hate relationship from the start. Things are smoothed over for now, and I am liking it. I am on my FOURTH extractor. I have broken the screw for the barrel band. This screw broke under recoil, and left half of it still threaded through the barrel slot. This required me using a Dremel tool to cut through the barrel band to remove it. Mossberg has always sent me new parts. However, it's tough to get with them on the phone.

Mossberg is an american made firearm engineered to the entry level priced market in all categories the sell. Wether it is over/under shotguns, pump shotguns, 22 rifles or lever actions. Are the functional and relatively accurate-- yes. Are they the best made in class-- no. Will they maintain resell value-- maybe as long as you do not factor inflation. Do I own one or have I ever owned one-- no.

The old 500's were pretty good, but I have so far, never personally know anyone who has gotten one of their 835's (at least I think that is what they are called) that didnot have problems. I am talking about the 3.5 inch magnum. They just don't hold up if you shoot them much. One thing they start doing is not picking up the next shell out of the mag tube, and they just get worse.

And I can't for the life of me, understand how anyone would give 400.00 plus for one the Mossburg levers, when there as so many fine used Marlins and Winchesters out there. But that's just me, I guess.

Same experience. My first shotgun, and I will someday hand it off to Y2K - after I'm gone. Good American company! :D

have two, a 500 20ga pump, and an old 43a? 22. both workman like tools.
not collector's item maybe but certainly usable. the 22 is way accurate too,
when my eyes were younger, i could light kitchen matches at 50'.
careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

I've got a short barreled 835 for turkeys and waterfowl. It points like a rifle,...I love it. I like their shotguns, but would stay away from their levergun just by what I've read on this site.

If the gun companies were smart (and devious), they'd troll forums like this, and find out who seems 'influential' - then somehow let them 'win' one of their products which they'd especially inspected and made sure would function FLAWLESSLY.

Seriously, though, it is the first five or six people who get a new model of whatever just came out, who really determine how the rest of the shooting community will accept that firearm.

I hope when I get my 77/44 I like it so much and sing such praises that it creates a run on the product, assuring it prominence in the firearms lexicon of the 21st Century...

First shotgun I ever got was a 1991 3" M500 "Mariner" stainless riot gun with both speed feed & folding stocks. It sits loaded up with BB, Buck & Slug.

Got 3 barrels for it now, Riot, Bird & Rifled Slug. Used to have 4 when I had the Muzzleloader barrel. Hard to find a more versitile gun except maybe a TC or Handi...

It's one of my 3 "pry it from my hands" guns...

Hi All,

I've got a Mossberg 500 series 12 guage pump. It's the only shotgun that gets any use around here. I'm 99% sure that the military buys a dressed up version for their combat shotgun. I've seen an ad for it in the last two or three weeks.

The only Mossberg I've heard good about was the 500 shotgun. Our armorer went thru them after they came in; his proclamation was: "as good as an 870, but uglier!" As a Sgt. I carried an AR, so I didn't have any personal experience w/'em.

I have a mossberg ATR100 in 30-06, I did a little work on it and with match bullets will do 1/2" at 100yds. The action is based on remington700,also the 700 scope mounts fit this action. I bought another one for my son inlaw who loves his. For the money it cant be beat.
