Looking at a Marlin 336 RC that dates to 1957/8. The owner says they are factory
holes. When did Marlin start drilling and tapping the top of the receivers?
not that it matters. I'm most likely going to buy it anyway. More curiosity than anything else.

1957 for the 39A & 336, though Brophy's book says 1956 I have never seen one. It started with the introduction of the Golden 39A.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

If I remember correctly it was the mid 50's.

Thanks. That would fit.
I haven't had it in my hands yet and the photos aren't great. But the price is right and I want a .35 Rem.

I have owned a very nice 1949-vintage 39A for several years. It came with a scope mount, and I knew it was not factory-original. But the scope base is an old Marlin base, and that plus the quality of the D&T job make me strongly suspect it was returned to the factory for the modification early on.
A scope does take away from the eye appeal of the 39A's lines, but I'll confess my pushing-60 eyes appreciate the assistance of the glass. The best thing about it -- I bought it for about $200 less than a comparable non-D&T'd specimen would have cost me.

Some 336 rifles were factory drilled and tapped as early as 1955.
