This came up in discussion on the weekend. A buddy was talking about wanting to convert his Ruger #3 from 22 Hornet to 218 Bee.
Doable?

Yup. It would make an $800 rifle into a $400 varminter, and I don't even know if the bore/twist would be compatible.

The barrel would need to be set back about .060" due to the longer brass length of the Hornet, but the bore and twist would be fine. You would also need to change the extractor, or modify the current one. Very doable though.

Ruger No.1s were made in .218 Bee so extactors may be available.

Have you considered making it a K-Hornet? A buddy of mine did just that and it worked out quite well. You can still shoot the standard Hornet cartridge in the K-Hornet chamber.

About 35 years ago I bought what was advertised as a winchester model 70 in .22 hornet. It was a first year 4 diget number. I got to the range, shot it and found it was reamed out to K-hornet! I hadent gave much for it and decided to keep it, bought dies etc. Ballisticly a better gun, but it probley cost me potentialy $3,000! Thats okay though, since I gave about $145 back then!

He likes the cartridge and intends it for varminting. No reason it should not work out well, which will increase its value to him.Pete44ru wrote:Yup. It would make an $800 rifle into a $400 varminter, and I don't even know if the bore/twist would be compatible.
