Pictures of leverguns decorated by Native Americans

Post by Gary »

I like Native American art and old photos. Has anyone got any pictures of levers with native American or Southwestern embellishments? Here is one that I found. Got any more?

It looks like brass tacks were all the rage during the 1800's. :D

Was there any rhyme or reason for the tacks? Did certain designs mean anything? Did number of tacks mean anything?

Here is a 73 with both tack work and rawhide. The design on the butstock was a symbol of the wheel of life representing the four seasons. This was a commonly used symbol before Hitler bastardized.

I had a customer request I do the same on a 92 for him but he requested a star of David, instead.

Here's one I did for an Irishman.

Beautiful work, Nate. I may have to get some rawhide and brass tacks for my Marlin 1894.

Mescalero, I did have a suspiscion, but nothing I could prove. I had just went to wisconsin as my dad was dieing. I had picked up the family guns, got back to california and didnt have room for them in my already full safe. So they were loose in the house. I had just got back and a day or two later my truck was stold out of my driveway. I hadent taken out a S&W model 60 out of its hideing spot yet and still had the truck loaded with family tools too. The truck still hasnt showed up in the past six years. Also had a JC Pennys card in it too. My house got hit and guns stolen a day or two after that. In a day the C Card was hit for over 4K! I got ahold of security at penneys and we went through the receipts together. Found my name forged on a dozen receipts, but also found two that a woman had signed her own name on the shopping spree and it went through! (Kiane Neimuth). Took copys of everything to sheriffs detective, found out she had just got out of jail on a identical MO caper! When arrested she wouldnt crack, just admitted to stealing the CC out of truck that someone gave her a ride in! She effectively got only a couple months! Here is a list of the guns I lost.

That is just horrid, and you had good, solid proof, you would think the cops could have made something of that.

Mesquilaro, Thats was the short version, here is more. After turning in what I had to the detective, he remarked how did you get this? I couldnt have! Hell, I spent my life in security for lockheed 35 + years and had just retired, just knew how to talk to another security person. Anyway after the contact with the dick, I went shopping for another truck. I went by a salesman I had dealt with in the past, mentioned why I was looking for another truck and mentioned the girls name they were now looking for. Coincidence of all coincideces, the salesman was the very person she had went to jail for!! His step daughter had brought a friend over and that friend had brought "Kiane Neimuth" along. A day or two later his house was burglered, and many guns stolen. He solved his own case also, by checking neighbors and got a matching discription of the girl pulling up with some boys and waiting outside while they hit the house. She woudnt roll on the guys. Probley thought she was dead if she did. She got probation, no jail, but stupidly broke probation, got a few months, got out and I got hit right after! The detective couldnt get her to roll on my case, just admitted to stealing the credit card. She effectively got a couple months. I got up in court and started to protest as my truck and gun loss`s wasnt even mentioned!! I was given the bums rush and essentialy told to shut up! This was in Lancaster California in 2003.
Now, do you think that had the detective was the one who got hit, or a friend of his, that she wouldnt have talked? I love california! That samari sword might have been worth a fortune in itself! I dont know as my BIL got it overseas and gave it to me many years ago.

Below is the direct link. There is also a mega sized download of the picture. The caption is, "Donley's Wild West Town, Union, IL".

I'd venture to guess that there are more old guns with leather and brass tacks on them done by non-native Americans, than there ever were done in the period by Indians.

Same reason that "urban" natives put spinners on their Escalades today, I 'spose.

No doubt some rifles have been faked with tacks and rawhide, but dont sell it short! I have been a student of the old west, indians and such. I am 68 years old and for many years I have read everything I could on the era, and have visited countless museums. It was highly if not standard practice for the indians all over the country to do so. I would suspect the vast majority are very legit from my experience.

1965 to 2000. 1965 to 1969 in Burbank and 1969 to 2000 in palmdale AF plant 42. Mostly worked graveyard but pulled major overtime on all shifts. Saw everybody that ever worked for lockheed or they saw me! I carried and retired with the #1 badge on the guard dept. Think I held the record for all time seniority and hours worked on my dept for lockheed.
