Need help w/front bead height

I recently installed a Williams peep on my Win. '94. I have it bottomed out and it still shoots 9" high at 50 yds. Would like it to shoot about 2" high. Is there a quick and dirty way to figure how much higher the front bead needs to be? If I were able to measure the center of peep to center of bore accurately I would try to trig it out. Don't want to get a bead that's just right for a bottomed out peep; I'd like some adjustment leeway. Considered buying 2 or 3 different height beads from Brownell's but I'm all for a simpler way if one exists.

soon 2 retire , Not that hard to figure out. The way I do it is to...
1- measure the sight radius. lets say its 24"
2- divide the range into inches (50 yd = 1800")
3- that`s 1800 / 24 =75 (75 sight radius`s to the target)
4-you are hitting 9" off the aim point...
9.000" / 75 = .120
5- your front sight needs to be .120 " taller.
6 I would go for a sight .130 -.140 taller than the existing one.

A neat way to go is to buy a Skinner front and file it to the height you need. the very nice post sight you end up with gives a good sight picture.My favorite.

Yep. Just did it at the range today for an adjustment...

25 yards. One inch high. Thread pitch on peep is about 1:40. Barrel 20" and receiver about 4"

So...for every inch between sights there is a yard between front sight and target.

I need to lower the sight-to-target angle by one inch, so the between-sights angle by 1/36th or thereabouts.

(because of the 1" to 1 yard ratio cited above)

So, about 1/36th of an inch is about 1 revolution of my sight screw - slightly more, since 1/40th is smaller than 1/36th. Turned it about 1 and 1/8th turns and it was RIGHT ON...

You know, if you call Williams and tell them what sight you put on your rifle, they will send you the correct front sight. No math necessary.

Half the responses, from fellow levergunners, used to be that a higher front sight t'wernt needed.

Just be sure you do your front sight height calculation, using the distance the POI is "too high", with the peep in the middle of it's adjustment range, and not all the way down - which is the way I fear your "9 inches high @ 50yds" was shot.

Your fears are correct I was bottomed out. At the middle of the adjustment range I shot over the very large piece of cardboard the target was stapled to and over the plywood the cardboard was affixed to. There was no aimpoint that I could shoot for because it was way lower than the target backboard. I bottomed out the sight then measured 12" below the target and pasted another target. That's how I found I was 9" high; I aimed at the bottom bull.

As high as that may be, it is what you need to use for the front sight height calculation.

If you use the 9" figure, you're going to be doing this all over again, later - don't ask me how I know.

BTW - the calculations are based on the amount of difference @ 100 yards, not any old distance one may choose.
