Hondo's first groundhog

Post by hondo1892 »

I have a mountain cur, that is named Hondo immagine that. :D Well he's going to be a year old the 13th of this month and today he killed his first groundhog. It was just a little one but he got it all on his own. I thought he dug up one that my neighbor caught in his live trap earlier. He always comes and gets me to put the hogs and coons down. We really can't shoot around our here, houses to close. I had one before that would stalk them like a cat, don't know how Hondo is doing it. If he gets another one I'll have to take some photo's. This was a proud day for daddy.

Our old Border Collie cornered a big GH once in the barn. She killed it, but it cut her up pretty bad before the fight was over. Dad took her down to the pond afterwards, and she just waded in and stood there totally exhausted. She was probably 10 years old at the time.

Then there was the time that she and dad were walking the farm and Bonnie all of a sudden ducked behind him. Dad stopped and tried to figure out what was wrong, as she always was 5 feet ahead of him....then he saw the bobcat...standing him off. Mrs. Bobcat got rather irritated and wasn't budging. They backed up and found a different route. It was spring and the creek bottom had flooded, dad figured the cat was moving her kits to higher ground as they were just up the hill from the flooded fields. In that instance, IMO the dog was being pretty smart.

My grandmothers old hound dog Smokey got into it with a groundhog, the groundhog died, but Smokey was pretty torn up.

If they grab in the wrong spot they do get cut up most of the time. My other cur just healed up from a coon bite. She grabbed it at the back end instead of the the neck. If they do much fighting with other critters they usually learn quick or quite.

Ok I hope this photo works out. This is Hondo with the last groundhog he caught. I really like him you can work him over pretty good and he just stands there and takes it. No I don't mean beat him just pull on his tail and othe annoying things kids do to dogs. Image

Timely, this morning on the way work I shot a squirl in the garden with the air rifle. When I got in and let Tia out the squirl was not there! Put Tia's nose to where it was this morning and told her to fetch it. Five mins later she found it still alive  tucked it some garden rubbish.
I grabbed the air gun and finnished it, I'd had no idea if it was not for the dog, poor little critter been with out water all day and a hole in him or was it her hmmm.

I don't know how y'all do it. for the last 30 years every dog we've had has been a sooner.

Sooner eat a meadow muffin than catch anything. The one we have now did bark at a gator that crawled up in the back yard, but I think that was for self preservation more than anything else.

The best watch dog I ever had was my flock of white Chinese Geese.

Congratulations to Hondo. :D :D

A cur dog is the best dog you can have. I wish I was in a position to have a Mt View Cur squirrel dog right now but I can do right by a sho' nuff dog right now. It is cool you have a catch dog.

My wife's little Atlas Terrier has been killing mice and rats lately. The heat is making them try to come indoors. The dog loves the kill. The look on her face is one of pure joy. Fun to watch, too.

Its only taken me 40 years to get a good dog. I've always owned mutts but decided to give mountain curs a try after talking to people that owned them. They are stubbern sometimes though.

Hey Hondo, head on over to the Big Game and Hounds section at http://www.predatormastersforums.com/ub ... hreads.php . Lot's us guys who either own or have owned hunting curs and terriers. Your dog will fit right in. Varmints, Coyote, Coon, Big Game, Hogs etc are all fair game to those boys.

Congrtats on the kill and super looking dog you got there, LK

Hondo's a nice lookin' dog. I like the brindle. Mr. Marbles my Boxer mutt is a machine when it comes to younger groundhogs. He's got a lot of speed and if he can run them down out in the open, between the barns, they're toast. He even treed a huge old boar groundhog last year. I took a pic of it before I shot it out of the tree. Counting the treed boar he accounted for 6 last year. He's awful good at treeing possums and coons as well here in the yard. He sits at the base of the tree and barks until I come out and finish it for him. Wouldn't trade a good dog for the world.
