OT - Glen Rose Texas

Post by Barcelona Rick »

Just walked in from several days in Glen Rose, Texas. My boy, his wife, son ,daughter, my bride and I spent a wonderful vacation piddling around Glen Rose. We checked everything out and Fossil Rim Wildlife Park is very neat. We spent the day there and saw some outstanding Whitetails Bucks in velvet. Kids really enjoyed the wildlife. We all piled in my F150 Supercrew and just had a blast. Friday night we eased out to the Loco Coyote Cafe/Watering Hole and ate a belly full. Gotta be the best onions rings I have ever eaten. My boy (25 years old but still my boy) tried to finish up the large Angus hamburger....he almost got that sucker eaten but the french fries and onion rings did him in....an ole boy that has been eating there for years said my son was the smallest fella to eat that much. Everything was great....no A/C but nice fans and swamp cooler or you can eat outside. I believe Glen Rose has more for families than just about anywhere else in Texas. Went down on the courthouse square on Saturday night and had supper at Anderson's Cafe and sat around outside listening to a couple old boy play and sing......if ya have some spare time and wanta have some family fun I sure suggest giving Glen Rose a try....

I also enjoy looking at the dinosaur footprings in the rock along the Paluxy River. Pretty cool place.

And the two life size dinosaur statues in the park on the Paluxy. many years ago, we spent the night in tents there with a group of YMCA Indian Guides and the kids were fascinated by the statues in the moonlight - very realisitic.

Rangerider follow 67 toward Hico about 9 miles outta Glen Rose turn right on CR 1004 (I think).....Loco Coyote is down the road a mile or so on the left. They are only open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and part of the day on Sunday. BBQ is pretty darn good too. We missed the blackberry cobbler but we heard it was about the best in central Texas...

You missed our cowboy shoot outside Cleburne by only a week! Glen Rose is nice. I may have to try those the next time I'm over there to shoot!

Griff , Which club do you shoot? I saw 2 on the sass website and am interested in CAS. I dont know anyone local that shoots either club match. Any Info woud be appreciated. We live in Ft. Worth and was trying to find a close club. The websites for both clubs seemed to be outdated. Thanks in advance.

jumbeaux, & redbeardinntx;

Both clubs shoot every month at the Ormsby Ranch outside Cleburne. Can't say about the CVV website, but LSFSS should be up-to-date; we shoot the second full weekend each month, while CVV shoots the 4th weekend each month.

A group of shooters along with my wife & I started the Lone Star Frontier Shooting Club in 1991; we've hosted the oldest annual match in TX, "North Texas' Roundup" since November of 1991... now held in the spring... seems everyone was tired of the cold, wet weather of Thanksgiving... can't say I blame 'em for the change... but it was still fun. CVV was started in either '94 or '95 and shot over nearer to Glen Rose, but after losing their range a few years ago due to housing encroachment, they moved to the Ormsby Ranch also. There's been talk of combining the two... but... I like having two opportunities to shoot. Although they have different officers, their match directors are not too different. But, enough so that I get a little different "feel" to their matches. Yep, I have a favorite... but I'll leave it to you to guess which it is! :P

I will probably not match the LSFSC match next month... but should be in for the CVV match toward the end of the month. Both of ya are invited out... Let me know, I'll bring enough guns and ammo to outfit ya. 8)

Im certinatly not trying to "jack" jumbeaux's therad but wanted to say thanks to griff for the offer ,but I should be outfitted ok.

I have an evil roy 5-1/2 cimm and beretta stampead for the hand guns,
an 28in uberti 73 copy for the "classic" c-boy and long range pistol cal , with rossi 92 for any close work all the above in .45 colt ,
with a 12g ttn hammered 1878 copy for the street howitzer
I also have an1895 marlin 45/70 for long range rifle
Just waitin on leather to tie it all in.
Funny thing is I had most of it all before I even heard of sass. Any other ideas?? I had heard one club didnt allow stainless guns because there were no stainless around in 1880s, eventhough it looks very close to pollished nickle.
I wanted to shoot soon but still working on the duds for the range. Are they sticklers for 1st timers? Oh as for ammo im good with a couple "K" 250 grainers for all the above, And dusting off the dilion SDB that hasent seen daylight since my baby girl showed up ( she is driving now)
Damed thing is its taken me longer to find an "alias" than to find the hardwear. Well again I thank ya for the info and am looking to start after vacation later this week.

I'm not sure I've heard of a club that doesn't allow stainless... the NCOWS organization is pretty finicky, but I'm not sure enough of their rules to know fer certain... but I think stainless is ok even with them. Boots, jeans, western shirt, and cowboy hat (optional, but if you wanna wear headgear, just remember, no ball caps allowed); that's about it. Even lace up boots are ok as are some other shoe types. You probably won't need the 45-70 for a monthly match... we tend to keep things simple in the summer.
Ammo requirements are simple: pistol ammo < (less than) 1000 fps; rifle ammo < 1400 fps, and keep shot size smaller than #4.

Griff and Redbeardinntx,

Griff I appreciate the offer. You are the kinda man that makes this sport and forum great. I might try to come watch a time or two. I'm kinda handicapped and don't get around real good....but I do enjoy shooting. Just don't have the legs or lungs to do awhole lot. If I finally get over this mess I'll sure enjoy participating. I've got a Colt SAA, Marlin 1894C and a couple SXS 12 gauges.

Redbeardinntx....man I love it when folks comment on everything so no worry here about any hijacking ever.....sometimes this site is my little private escape from reality.

Maybe I'll see ya'll at one of the shoots.....

I've never been there myself but I have heard that Dr. Carl Baugh runs the Creation Evidence Museum there in Glen Rose. They say it's quite a place to see with lots of fossils and such.
