Some older .30-.30

Post by North Bender »

Hello:

A friend came in today and said "You shoot 30-30, take these".

Sorry for the poor photo but this should be a slam dunk for you folks. The boxes are full and in good shape. I'm wondering how old these are (guess is around 1960), and if they're worth more than new cartridges. My bud was going to rip the end tabs off but i asked him not to.

The Remington is labeled 1430 and 1330.

My guess (Guess mind you) is early 60's on the Remington boxes since the ones I inherited from my dad are this type.
I dunno about the Winny box but I like it. :)

Nice old boxes, especially since they're full!

I have a few boxes of old ammo, most are partial boxes, but I keep them just because... I really like the "art" on the old boxes.

"New" .30-30 ammo is cheap enough, and it's easy enough to reload that I'd just hang on to those because you aren't going to find that many boxes, especially full boxes in that kind of condition.

If you're like the rest of us you'll be sorry about 17 seconds after you sell them no matter what they bring.

North Bender,
Welcome to the forum! 1960's would be right for the Remington ammo.

The Winchester box dates from 1940 to 1946 when the box style was changed. According to the book "100 Years of Winchester Cartridge Boxes", that particular "Bear" box is somewhat scarce in .30 (.30-30) and has an estimated value of $150 - $300 if in good+ condition.

If the cartridges in the box were in the box when new, the headstamps will be Super Speed .30 W.C.F.

The Remington cartridges go back to the 1950's, and the Winchester box is even earlier, probably early post WWII years. This is what ammunition packaging looked like when I was a kid. It still should!

Great active forum! Thanks you guys.

w30wcf, you made me look, so I opened the Winchester box. It's actually only partly full. There are only 6 cartridges of the "Super Speed" and 9 cartridges of REM UMC 30-30.

Wow, those boxes are nice! I like them all but that Winchester Silvertip box.....well, they don't make em like that anymore, and they never will again. Very nice! My two cents: keep them. If you shop the sales in the fall, you can find new Remington or Federal .30-30 pretty cheap--after rebate I got two boxes of Federal for $2.99 ea.--and that was just a couple months ago!

Boys, there is no thought of shooting or molesting such boxes, I'm deeply into ammo. Just never looked at .30-.30 much because like oregon73 wrote I can buy it so cheap.

What a deal! Starts the New Year off on the right foot.

Nice old boxes as my good friend w30wcf accurately and honestly described the ammo. I too, collect the old boxes and lovingly wrap them in plastic wrap, but..................when I get a partial or mismatched box, I can't help but to fire a few rounds out of it (sometimes all of it!) for velocity measurements or just for the nostalgics. The way I see it, when I "hit the road", someone else will probably shoot 'em as the collecters value is diminished.

Years ago when (early seventies) 45-90 brass was unattainable, I shot up a real nice box of blackpowder rounds for reloading and hunting. They all went off just fine.-------------------Sixgun

Welcome to the forum. Given your forum name I take it you're from North Bend. Spent some time there twice for basic and advanced clan lab training at the state's fire training center.

I believe I would wrap them in saran wrap and then place them in a zip lock bad with all the air pushed out and then put them in a cigar bog or something not easily crushed.
I'm 62 and I remember the boxes but can't tell you the year. I would contact Remington and Winchester and ask someone if there is a way you can tell the date from the codes or maybe they can give you a date from some of the numbers. Mike

the collector value of the full boxes is more than a $10 box of Federal Blue box at Walmart. Hold on to those.

I'm finding out that they are worth more than Federal 30-30 from Wal Mart.

RTG Sporting Collectables just sold one of these 30-30 "Grizzly" boxes for $250, and reported another one went for $450. They said the 30-30 was the second hardest caliber to find in the "Grizzly" box, behind the .32.
