The gunsite safety was of course designed to let the shooting hand thumb rest on the safety while firing. This was an old practice that has been pretty much abandoned, except by a few, IMHO.
While good shooting can be done, that way, it's unnessary, and in this day, most people don't even know about it.
Any 1911 fans here?

Thanks for the kind words - at my advanced age my old surgeon's hands are somewhat arthritic and those thumb safeties work better for my high grip and I'm not a fan of beaver tail grip safeties with "memory bumps".Arminius wrote:Hey, and I thought I was the ONLY one who loves his Gunsite safety!!!OJ wrote:
The only "mods" I've done are ... and Gunsite Low Mount Thumb Safeties ... all done by me.
Please tell me: what is recommended by the Coronel himself and condemned by his followers, or why did it drop out of favour???

( quite "clean" on buying guns now, I´ve moved to watches )
( DEFINITELY more expensive, but I do "carry" more often)
I personally have always been a great fan of Jeff Cooper and his feelings about the 1911 - but, as I've said in the past - if we all had the same preferences, we'd probably all be driving Yugos (or such) and the lack of competition would price them out of sight for most of us -

The mods I listed are inexpensive and just suit me better - I have no interest in competition and I figure sights that are good for target shooting will serve my well enough for personal defense. I've been a fan of the 1911 since I enlisted at age 17 in 1943 and the current ones I alternate carrying are the best for me. My 1911 Colt Government Models are for my shooting and I have no interest in a "loaded" model but, some of my friends do -

I got this for the price of the Desert Warrior I was looking at. Super deal and it is mine now. The sidekick is mandatory for 1911 owners. The grip on a single stack 1911 fits my hands and I can actually hithe target (on a good day)... Some double stacks are horrible that way.
