45-70 loads, again
Gentelmen, I will be reloading 45-70 for the first time, and I would like a good accurate, hunting load using IMR3031, and 405 gr. Remington soft point bullets. I will be using this to hunt with this year, and don't expect to have shots much over 100yds. I have never loaded anything this size before, but know that many of you have. My eyes are as old as I am, so I've put a 4 power scope on my Marlin 1895SS. I don't need a thumper, as I'll only be shooting Texas Whitetails. You've all helped me in the past, and I'll appreciate your advice now.

39 grs of 3031 with a large rifle primer and your 405 gr bullet should work like a champ.

Given what you stated about just shooting whitetails w in 100 yards -- +/- --, I think that you don't really the 405 SP. I'll bet that the 300 HP handily will do the job....
I load my Marlin 1895 Cowboy & Browning 1886 w/ that bullet behind IMR3031 & a Winchester Large Rifle primer. I don't have my load data handy for all the details of the load.
When I lived in CA, my local firearms emporium proprietor loaded the 300 HP for feral hogs & it was very effective. It would securely anchor them out to about 125 yds. w/ barrel sights.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

I'm using the 405's, cause I've got 100 of them sitting on the shelf.

39 grains behind a 405 gr soft point also worked good on a couple of wild pigs. It opened good, but did lose a lot of its weight. Pigs are a little tougher, though.

39 grains is a great load for whitetails. It is pretty easy on the shoulder also.

the above loads will work on texas deer.IMHO it is way over kill for for the deer we have.once you burn up those 405's get a lee 340 gr mold and a can of IMR 4198 or AA5744.this combo makes a good hog deer load and it "very" cheap to shoot.

I shoot 39.0 Gr 3031 with the 405 gr cast and get 1 hole groops at 100YDS with my Marlin. Thank you Elmer! Pleanty of power for deer and mild on the sholder. SO 39.0 GR +4 J.Michael
