Question? .45colt FPS in 20" carbine

Yesterday I loaded 25 rounds of .45 Colt with a 255gr cast bullet and 9.0 grains of Unique. It will be awhile before I see my friend with the chronograph and I am wondering what kind of velocity I can expect with this load from my Rossi 92 .45?

I imagine you'll get 1150-1250 fps. A lot is dependent (it seems) on how your gun is chambered and bored.

Thanks Hobie, I didn't expect anything in the 1700's, just wanted an idea.
I reckon that would put down an Arkansas deer.

I'll bet it'll do just fine for deer. Are You going to use it it this fall? That rifle would be downright handy in the brush.

I'll carry it and see what happens. I put in for the elk permit but you know what the chances of that are, did you apply this year? I thought about using it for elk if I was blessed with a permit, that or the 45-70,or a 30-30.
Have you seen how the bonus doe permits were changed?Will you hunt down by Sylamore this year?

8 gr. of Unique behind a 250 gr. cast bullet got me 1083 fps. out of my 20" Rossi Carbine. I expected a little more, but it will do.

Yes I put in for an Elk tag and if I ever get one the .45-70 will get the nod for that hunt for sure. I will be hunting Sylamore and Moccasin creek both this year. I didn't know anything about the doe permit change (put in for one of those too) so I'll have to check AGFC's website. Thanks for the heads-up.

JerryB, I checked the website and I'm glad to see that "doe days" are back we have a heck of a lot of does around here.

General rule of thumb is that the long barrel will add roughly 20% to your pistol velocity.

zack coyote, thanks for the load data, I looked in my notebook and found the load I tested last year was the same as yours, 8.0 grains of Unique with a 255 haed cast swc. Average fps was 1069, pretty close to yours must be a good load.

That matches my experience. In a 24" Marlin, I ran 10.5 U and a 250 for 1375 fps (fast enough to get on the steel at 300 yards with a tang sight, overcoming about 9ft of drop.....). So 1200 comes to mind as just about right.
