Off Topic, but a classic, Krag Jorgenson bolt action

Post by Lastmohecken »

I found one at a local gunshop that is calling my name. Are there any fans of this old war horse, here? Post some pictures if you have a nice one.

No pics. I only have owned one. Many years ago I took one in trade. It was a real clunker but was helping a guy out. He used it for Elk and wanted to upgrade to a Parker Hale .30-06 I had and did not have my asking price so I gave him part trade for the old Krag.

An interesting piece of engineering to say the least.
Mine shot quite well but looked like it was used for a club. :D

No pictures here either(camera broke.) I love them. The one I have has been sporterized some time in the 20's or 30's guessing by the parts that were used. Mine shoots very well using 220grn RN.

This is my Chrismas Krag I got few years ago for $225. The thing I like about it was that there was no extra holes tapped in it and the sporterizing did a good job of copying the original carbine. I still need to get a handguard for it. I never see one at gunshows.

That's a pretty nice one. The one I am looking at is not as correct as the one you have. It is of simular configuration, but has a rubber recoil pad that is poorly done and needs to be redone. and the pinned in front sight is overly tall and loose, and it has a nice old Redfield receiver sight. The trigger guard looks chromed or nickle plated, maybe one taken off of a parade rifle, I don't know, and the stock has some light checkering.

Still it looks to be be sound stock, and the bore looks good. It's for sale for $375.00 including tax, but I think I can get it a little cheaper, but not much. I know I will have to put some more money into it before I am content, so I am trying to decide if I want to spend the money.

This one was my Granddads, I hunted mule deer with him a few times, he was well off and could have had any new fangled scoped rifle he wanted, but he loved hunting with his Krag. Didn't quite understand his logic back then, but I do now.

I imagine he covered a lot of ground with this combo.

Scott. Great picture. My Grandfather had a similar set. Colt .22 and sproterized Springfield '03. I'll have to get a picture of those two.

Here's my Krag. Lousy picture but a great shooter.

This is mine, don't know who did the stock but it is a professional job and shoots around an inch at a hundred. Great trigger, someone took a lot of time on this one. Old guy traded it in at my local shop and I was first one in behind him. Has the old Weaver K4 scope. Great gun, I bought dies and have 80 rounds loaded and ready for mulies.

The redfield sight is a plus. Keep looking around . Around here sportorized Krags don't go for over $300, unless they are professional done. But they also make a great project gun. I plan on rebluing and refinishing the stock on mine ,since it has many coats of varnish on it.

I've seen one locally that looks a lot like that. I'd love to have it but IIRC they want $350-400 for it and I just can't see it. :(

BenT, if that hand guard thing bothers you too much, I'll be glad to take that Krag off your hands.

Old time hunter , I'll just have to deal with not having the handguard. I did get a redfield peepsight for it that does not require drilling any holes. I need to replace the front blade and do some shooting.

Here's mine. As you can see, I found one of the no-drill peep sights and put on it. Makes everything mobetter for these ole eyes. This rifle is et up with character. Some good ole boy 'personalized' it with a 10 pt head carved into the stock with a date stamped below it in 1934 (I think, been a while since I looked). I won it on an internet auction years ago. When I got it and was cleaning it up, I checked the buttstock trap and found two old Western open point cartridges stuffed down in it. For emergency use, I suppose. They were completely gunked up with oils from the stock. I bet the rifle had been sitting up somewhere for decades before it was auctioned. The cartridges would have been found and removed if not.

I know most here would probably look down on this specimen because of the stock carving. Personally, it adds a lot to it in my opinion. That's just the way I am I guess. It also probably caused me to win the auction for $135, too, so that made even more special.

If only the thing could talk and tell me stories of it's adventures....

This is my first Krag, bought in 1960 for $15.00. It has a Pacific receiver sight and I killed my first deer with it.
Image

This is my second Krag, bought in 2005 for $300.00. It has a Lyman 48 receiver sight. The stock has been slimmed and the metal reblued.

My third Krag is in the vise a few feet to my left. It will be born sometime this year. It has a 1901 action, a new 03A3 barrel, a new walnut sporter stock and a Redfield receiver sight.

Yep... I like Krags and the 30-40 round. I also have a good Winchester 95 (born in 1898 in 30 US and a Brownchester 95 is 30-40. Like em ALLOT!

Does that mean it's an -06 now? I thought the -06 was longer than the .30-40?

You cut about 1.5 inches off the breech end, thread for the Krag receiver and rechamber the 03A3 barrel. Now you have a brand spanking new barrel for the Krag rifle in the original 30-40 caliber.

Anybody heard when the manufacturers are going to run some more 30-40 ammo or brass? Midway has dropped it from their brass site and everyone else just says it is seasonal. Which season? I have 80 rounds but would like more.

Well, I waited too long to get that particular Krag. I went into buy it, yesterday, and just missed the owner who had it on consignment, it seems that he decided to sell it to his grandson, who wanted it. Oh well, maybe his grandson will enjoy it.

So, today, the same shop got in a really nice Uberti 4.75 inch singleaction peacemaker (Cattleman) in 45 Long Colt. It had such a good action on it, I had to have it. I guess a Krag will have to wait a little long. :D
