The long gun is king of the castle. The handgun's only value is for CCW or to help you GET to the long gun

I'd even take my CZ 452 squirrel killer over a handgun. Hitting the target is the No. 1 goal, and I don't miss with that beauty.
There is some argument for a handgun, as it is harder to wrestle away in CQC.
I have heard this many times, but I don't buy it. With the long gun the user has many solid points of contact and really excellent leverage. A person trying to grab the barrel, assuming they somehow escape being shot down, will be pitting their hand and forearm muscles against my back, torso and leg muscles. That's a short and one-side fight. I can see something like a long Mosin being difficult to use in close quarters, but a compact levergun carbine is perfect. It's a nice stable platform that you can aim and fire accurately at 3 AM. It mounts lights nicely, and by accelerating HP rounds faster it helps ensure that they open up and DECREASES overpenetration risks. It also takes fewer shots to get the job done, again decreasing the amount of lead in the air that could hurt a bystander.
My experience thankfully does not include shooting someone, but I have had to get up in the middle of pitch black nights to shoot four legged intruders. One time it was an enraged muskrat fighting my puppy

The long gun is a real comfort to have when the sky is black and trouble is brewing. The hand gun--forget it. The thing is wavering all over and I can't see the front sight with my bleary eyes. After trying to utilize it a few times for "parameter checks" I ditched it and now only use short guns for urban CCW.
