got to hold a new 76

Post by 73sTheBest »

It was a 45-60 rifle (28")... To heavy! Or maybe I'm to old.
Anyone see the new alliant data on the 38-40 rifle, get this, 180gr at 1745fps or 200gr @ 1600fps all at 73 pressure.
Shame we all wasted so much money on nefangled junk. We need to start a 73 forum for people that know what there doin.

Interesting. I have not seen that data. Is this loading intended to be be safe in the original Winnie 1873, or is it specific to the Uberti 73? For my part, I don't think I would shoot such a load in my original Winchester 1873s, but the Uberti 73, should be up to the task.

Again, welcome aboard! I think you will find that this forum is a great forum for anything with a lever. Lots of knowledgeable folks on this board. :)

I handled one for the first time two weeks ago and was surprised at how well it handled. Expected it to be way too heavy but was pleasantly surprised. Now I want one!

I'll have to look for that new Alliant .38WCF data.

I just took a look at Alliant's website and could find no such data for the .38 WCF.

Back in the day, when I had an original 1876 .45-60, my standard load was 33 grains of IMR 3031 and a 300 grain lead FP. It shot fine and certainly did not harm the gun in any way. It was still goin' strong when it was traded away for an 1886.

That 38-40 load was published in one of the Alliant Powder reloader guides. The numbers 73sTB quoted were accurate but I don't have much faith in the data. Someone on here (Kirk?) tried it in a 92 and never got to the quoted velocity and had definite signs of pressure. I certainly would never stick it in a 73, new or otherwise.

I love the 73 action, but I would never use anything but black powder in one. Nothing else really seems to make sense.

That seems too high in vel.for a 1873 Winchester. I have a new Cimarron 1873 and although the metel is better,it is still a toggle link action. I will stay with the 1100-1300 vel. and pressure range for an original 1873 in mine.

They list the load at about 13500 cup. I'm sure its very slow burning powder and the usual suspect would be lots of shot to shot velocity inconsitancy. We need to find someone thats fired 20,000 of this in his 73.
