gray ash type substance in tumbled 45 cases
is it ash from powder, residue from tumbling or what? I loaded 28 cases and got 25 grains of this stuff (I tapped it out after sizing and priming the cases). only about 25 of the cases had it, thats a lot of stuff and I worry it could cause a squib. What do ya'll think and has it ever happened to you.

Did you use any liquid polishing compound in your tumbler, if so that's what it is, didnt get mixed up in the media totally and wound up in your cases.

Think he nailed it. Thats why I keep it simple and just use straight walnut shells makes life easy and I dont care how shiny the cases are.jnyork wrote:Did you use any liquid polishing compound in your tumbler, if so that's what it is, didnt get mixed up in the media totally and wound up in your cases.

I use untreated corn cob and walnut from the pet section at Walmart.

It may or may not be treated. Read the bag to see if chemicals haven't been added for various bugs (fleas, mites, etc.) that bother pets. What you want is 100% un-treated material. The reason I say that is that the stuff (redwood shavings I think) that my granddaughters use in their whatdoyacallit (gerible?) cages is treated with anti-flea, and other such chemicals.

Keep an eye on this thread over the weekend as there most likely will be more input over today and tomorrow than yesterday -- a work day. We've got a lot of really smart (don't let that go to your heads guys) reloaders.

Well, if it isnt the liquid case polish, there is only one other thing I can possibly think of. Did you leave these cases in a place where insects can get into them and build nests? Dont laugh, it happens, they also build nests in rifle bores and can destroy a gun if someone fires a round with a nest still in the gun. Otherwise, I am completely baffled.
Re: gray ash type substance in tumbled 45 cases
no it isn't insects it is a soft grey substance on the inside of the ash and it is fairly firm and stuck to the case until running it in the size.

What powder are you using? I've seen that with some powders over the years.
