The Onion: Trekkies bash film as "fun, watchable." Decry lack of bad acting and endless exposition.

Never seen a good Star Trek Movie. No wait... never seen one at all.

I'm afraid I'd have to listen to Capt. Kirk try to sing again.

We aren't offended... it's the Onion. The whole video is really summed up in my first line in the original post. Add a few costumed basement dwellers supposedly at one convention or another and you essentially understand the video.

And If I could download the video and add it to the CD I would.

Beside a general fondness for science fiction - and the endless possibilities is presents - I really like the Star Trek series and movies for some of the themes they represented so well. Friendship, loyalty, duty, honor, etc. If some of our young people watched the Trek shows instead of Southpark, MTV, etc., our society would be better off. Yes, some of the acting was corny as all get out, and some of the special effects in the original series were horrible. And yes, some of the stories/episodes make you cringe, but overall, neat ideas and stories were the norm, presenting all kinds of interesting scenarios. Roddenberry used this vehicle to explore a lot of contemporary issues - some done well, others not so well. All in all, being hooked on Star Trek as a kid (and adult) helped make me the kind of person I am today - and I'm happy with that! :D

Like Ysabel alluded to, the only difference between a western and Star Trek is the time period. Both are morality plays. One is in the past as we hoped it was and one is in the future as we hope it will be.

My biggest problem with the ST series/universe is that it is essentially a Military Socialist Utopia.

If you read all of the work in the universe, about the only capitalists ever mentioned are on the outer fringes &/or Ferengi.

And don't forget the line in "Voyage Home"... Quoth Kirk before he sells his glasses: "They still use money... we'll have to get some."

Hilarious video!

But then again, I loved Star Trek and watch all their new movies.

But then again, I loved the Korean War era K-rations, with their gelatinous ham and eggs in a can (among other gems) that I ate in Viet Nam, so what do I know about anything? :P :P

Gents,

In the original pilot for Star Trek, Captain Pike talks about his horse. Also, "Spectre of the Gun" has been mentioned as having a Western theme to it. The creator of Star Trek, Gene Rodenberry, used to refer to Star Trek as "Wagon Train to the stars."

Many episodes of the original Star Trek were good, but I find the best to be among the first dozen of the first season: The Cage; Where No Man Has Gone Before; Mantrap; Mudd's Women; What are Little Girls Made Of?.

I would like to see the new movie, but I fear that it is will not be true to original series.

I'd love to stick around and talk some more... but I have to take care of some chores so that I can cash in my Fandango tickets for first-run seating at 7:00 at the super big screen (I-Max) in Fresno. I'll tell you if Star Trek has any leverguns in the movie!

Star Trek and Westerns do have a common link: Gene Roddenberry wrote quite a few of the episodes of 'Have Gun, Will Travel.'

Agreed - one of the drawbacks to the series (and there were a few). Still, I liked that force had to be used - sometimes talking just doesn't cut it. Wish certain currently elected officials would understand that point...

As a long time Trekkie from the beginning of the series(dating myself I guess, I was a teenager), to now, the movie isn't half bad. Acting could be better, but for many just starting out in the movie business, they did a good job. Gonna have to see it again :D

My wife was a fan of the original series. Bought her tickets in 1986 I believe for a convention which featured Kirk and Spock together for the first time. They did a great job of answering questions from the audience about making the shows. There was virtually no budget for sets, Spock rode a bicycle on the set because he didn't have a car then.

Remember this was pre-Star Wars. I happened to see the opening night of Star Wars. The theater was almost empty because nobody knew what to expect. After that it was standing room only. The whole special effects expectations changed.

Star Trek had to depend on a story line and acting - what there was of both. I can see the connection with the 50's-60's western series writing.

In the series you never wanted to be the new guy that beamed down to help investigate the strange planet. Because you always had a line like, "Captain...over here...I think I found something". And then you became a pile of dust. Never failed.

The sainted Roddenberry had some far-out beliefs and tried to work them into the series as much as possible. In fairness the notion of a militarized socialist state was not really his preference, but was the result of combining the studio's demands for action with his message du jour about peace, free love, etc.
If you read all of the work in the universe, about the only capitalists ever mentioned are on the outer fringes &/or Ferengi.
Roddenberry invented them for the early part of the next generation series as a fairly blatant anti-capitalist and even anti-semitic "evil capitalist" creatures. The irony is they were instant favorites and went on to be one of the best parts of the TNG universe.

Still, I think they should have let it die a natural death rather than these constant revival efforts. I would have preferred a new Firefly series with more horses, leverguns and cows in it. Firefly 2, with even more chickens running around on dirt.

Joe, that's the Crewman #6 syndrome as explained in the movie, Galaxy Quest:

A movie or television show character who is completely expendable and whose only purpose on the show is to die. The character's death is usually used to demonstrate the gravity of the situation that the main characters will shortly find themselves in. Usually not in the show long enough to even be assigned a name... As in, - "Look out for that lava, Crewman Number Six!!"

I've watched almost every Sci-Fi and Western series (except a few came and went between '64 and '68, when I was in the Service). My view is that Firefly was the very best Sci Fi series ever produced; witty, lots of action, clever dialog and well developed characters, relatively believable stories, completely entertaining. What a shame that it lasted only about a dozen episodes; I still don't understand it.

I don't understand it either. But when I could I bought all the original episodes and the sequal movie Serenity on DVD. I can watch them when ever the urge hits me.

I also have the entire ST OS on DVD. Prior to getting the three sets I'd seen every episode many times, but not all of them in color. It was a treat seeing them all in full living color.

One of my children gifted me ST, First Season, on DVD. I watched the complete Firefly series not too long ago using streaming video on on Hulu.com (it's free, with short ad segments).

I am not one who collects many movies; but besides Broken Trail, Lonesome Dove and a few other truly great westerns, and an assorted classic or two (like Gone With The Wind and the Band of Brothers collection), I also have the mother of all Sci-Fi series and movies - the original and complete 1932 era Flash Gordon serials starring Buster Crabbe. As corny as it is by today's standards, I can still enjoy it through the eyes of my youth (it was one of the first serials ever to air on black and white TV of the fifties).

And I laugh at the horribly cheesy fight scenes where Flash swings at the air and four burly opponents fall down and just give up. But they didn't swear, dwell on sadistic scenes, or jump on every woman's bones like today's trash.

Nothing beats a tilted wooden spaceship, strings barely visible, spouting puffs of smoke out of the tail and firecracker sparks that quickly fall downward. Now THAT'S realism. And how about them Rock Men!
