Front and Rear Sight Options - Chaparral 1876

Post by Killer Kanuck »

Picked up my new Chaparral 1876 last night, and other than that sights, so far I'm impressed. Fit and finish is pretty good, action is pretty smooth right out of the box, shoulders nicely - too bad my dies and brass are weeks out. :(
So, I'm just wondering - what are my options for aftermarket front and rear sights? I'm thinking maybe a globe for the front (anyone happen to know the dovetail size), and although I like tang sights, I'm not sure I'd want one on a gun that could be a little higher on the recoil scale. Any recommended barrel mounted rear sights?

Oh, and just so you don't have to ask, here she is - 26" in 50-95 Winchester Express.

NICE!! :D :D I have a .45-75 SRC that's been sittin' around here, unfired, for a couple of years. No brass and I don't feel like makin' any, so it'll sit 'til properly headstamed brass comes available.

Anyone have any experience with the 5 leaf express sight that Jeff's Outfitter's has for $60? Looks like it would be a proper fit for a 50-95.

It looks nice but it seems a little odd.

The main sight seems low compared to the leafs when they are folded up. Like if you got it sighted in for 50yds, the first leaf might represent 250yds, etc. It looks like there's a monster drop anticipated from the main notch sight to the first leaf. Maybe it's just an optical illusion.

Also, it's a 1/2" dovetail ... or so it says. Is your rifle's dovetail 1/2 inch or 3/8ths inch.

I saw two of those at a gun dealer recently. One in .45-60 and another in .45-75. Both priced at $889. Is this the going price, or was this a real bargain?

I put a Marbles tang sight on mine and removed the factory rear. A Marbles slot blank fit nicely without any file work. This leads me to think they are standard 3/8 dovetails.
The Chaparral 76 uses standard original Win. 76 screws for mounting the tang sight and yours should already be tapped for the front screw and the rear screw replaces the existing tang screw. Have fun!! :D

Mike, you probably know about Rocky Mountain Cartridge in Cody. They make properly headstamped brass for the .45-75. Of course, they are not free ...... I just laid down $104 clams for forty .45-60 brass from them boys. Hoping it gets here soon.

That looks sharp - so much better than the veneer they applied to the stocks of the early ones (like mine)! Congratulations!!!

BTW, I put one of the folding circle front sites on mine, and a tang rear, but for a .45-60 compared to your .50-95, I wasn't worried as much about the recoil.
