A bit OT: Scope for Ruger #1, 45-70

Thinking Leupold fixed 2.5 but open to advice.

Anything under 4X I think the iron sight are faster and better then a scope . If you have a front sight on gun it will be in the field of view of a 2.5X scope or lower power if it a wide field of view scope .

I have a Ruger #3 in 45-70 and started out with a 4x Weaver K-4. Then I went to the Leupold 1.5x5x20 and really did not like it due to low light gathering with the 20 mm bell. I had to pass on a shot at an elk, so off it came and I settled on a fixed 4 power from Leupold with a 33mm bell. This has the perfect balance of magnification and length, I hate to put a big scope on a small rifle, but this one looks balanced.

After trying a few, like the Leupy and a great Weaver V-3, I found the best for me turned out to be an inexpensive Simmons 2x20 Shotgun scope !

With a OAL of 6", a weight of 7oz, and 5" of eye relief, it was more like an optical peep sight, than any scope I've ever used.

YMMV, of course - but that "cheap Simmons junk" ( I have a few - $25 used/$40 new) stood the test of shooting, time, and weather - right alongside all my other "quality" scopes (Leupold/Trijicon/Burris/Redfield/etc).

Leupold used to make (maybe they still do) a 2.5 - 7x variable with a small , straight objective lens. Had a friend with a 45-70 #1 and thats what graced his rifle -- it looked about right, size wise

Have a Weaver 2.5 mounted on a Marlin 39M, it is very quick to get on target even in thick brush on rab bits in North MN. But have to admit, the Leopold 1-4 scopes are even better. Have 2 of them mounted on Contender in 358B and 38SP. Have both fine and heavy duplex reticles, up to 200 yards they cant be beat.
