OT--'Smith Pre-Model 27**added photo**
While I have had several nice Model 27 'Smiths, I never did have an early one--until yesterday. There's just not a whole lot of 5 screw 27's around, especially one in nickel with a 5" barrel thats hardly been shot. (Well, thats gonna change ) This one was made in 1952 and is about as close to a pre-war Registered Magnum as a working guy can get to. Its got the early 6 line serrations on the backstrap. For you young-uns, a Model 27 is the .357 magnum on the 44 frame.
As most guncranks who have been in the gun game for a long time, we stopped playing with the 38 calibered guns many years ago as big bores are much more addicting. I believe this is the first .357 I have bought/stole (financially ) in more than 20 years (excluding O.M. Rugers) Let you boys know how she shoots in a few days.------------------Sixgun

I just KNOW it could not have been THAT long ago. I gotta remember where I came from ,
,
Morgan N.M--Here's the backstrap--the frontstrap is also like this.

I own the "working man's" version of the 27.....the 28. I got rid of my Python when I bought the 28. There is something about a BIG N frame shooting .357's.
Real nice find!

I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: OT--'Smith Pre-Model 27
Looks nice, Sixgun. I bet it'll be a great shooter. A friend of mine sold a very nice blue pre-27 last year for $700.00. The poor guy has been downsizing his great collection to pay for running water in his house. In addition, he bought his guns on credit and ran the bill up pretty high, so his wife put her foot down, and he agreed since he did overdo it with his guns.

The .44 Magnum wasn't intoduced until Dec 1955 while the .357 Magnum was introduced in 1935. The platform for the new-fangled .357 Magnum was the N-frame which was also the platform for the .38/44 at the time.

That's one sweet Model 27 Sixgun. Very nice indeed.
I'll trade ya two Klondike Bars and 1K 9½M Remington primers for it. If ya need a little more sweetener to clinch the trade, I'll throw in a can of CA almonds too.
Just for the young-uns, I'm sure "Sixgun" did not mean a 44 Magnum frame (because he didn't say magnum) although it is an N-frame."For you young-uns, a Model 27 is the .357 magnum on the 44 frame."

OK, lets fight!!!!!!!!!! Yea, Ed, your right. One thing about being in the game a long time, we tend to assume others know what we know. And we all know what "assume" does. It makes an "butt" out of "u" and "me".
I should have said the heavier "N" frame.
Thanks on the compliments and AkRay, thats what I paid. (7 c-notes) And yep, it has an "S" serial number. S 88334 --------Sixgun

Yep, I have a 28 also, trade in from Texas DPS.

Re: OT--'Smith Pre-Model 27
I sold a blued version to my best bud, back in the 70's - which I had glommed from some lawyer who stung himself trying to shoot it.
My pal still shoots it weekly, along with his other 6" blued N-frames (.44/M29 & .45/M25 ? ).
It has the three T's, and the cross-checked/matted frame top, etc.
They were the primo DA revolver of their day, for those who didn't care for the Colt DA feel.

Re: OT--'Smith Pre-Model 27
Thats awful nice there, sixgun. My dad has a 27-1 that is just made to shoot. There is not much finish left as it was a deputy gun for 35 years (nickel too) but the internals are nice. Not nearly as old as yours and dang sure not even close to being as classy. I have never seen the six-grooved in the flesh so if you get the chance, how bout a picture from the top.

Re: OT--'Smith Pre-Model 27
Ok, lets figure this out. Klondike bars and some rem 9.5 mag primers? Well, I feel as though I would be taking advantage of you so as I already have about 50K of primers, send me the K Bars but..........I want the Klondike bars to be fresh and packed in ice and when I say "ice", I mean the kind of ice that scratches glass ----------------------SixgunModoc ED wrote:

Allright YK,
Sixgun Jr., call your mom tell her much you miss her cooking, mention that dad does not really "need " that big old revolver.

Thanks for the picture. Sometimes I wonder which maker I like more: Winchester or smith.
There is something in that workmanship that I cant turn away from and with that last picture, I can just imagine what it would look like pointing that thing down range.

Sixgun - Great find and very reasonable price! Congratulations. Love the 5".
Is there more practical value with a 6 groove backstrap, versus the later iteration? Thanks for sharing.

GoatGuy, I don't think so. Its just an enginering change when they went to the 10 groove. (I think 10--my newer 27's all have target stocks on 'em)GoatGuy wrote:Sixgun - Great find and very reasonable price! Congratulations. Love the 5".

YKid, ---You really messed things up for me--I had to sneak that 'Smith in and now Big Mouth (Jr.) knows about it. He's gonna bribe me again so it looks like a pre-war '94 carbine is headed his way for free. I just hope he don't ask for the 25-35. ----------Sixgun
