Loading for the 50-95 Winchester

Well, I decided to take a chance, and I have a Chaparral 50-95 on order which should be here in the next week or so (the dealer has a "no b.s. guarantee", so if I get a lemon I can send it back without any problems). So now I have to feed it. Has anyone tried the new RCBS Legacy dies? Buffalo Arms has them for $45, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than even the CH4 dies. Anyone used trimmed 50 Alaskan brass? What molds/bullet diameters are folks using?

I'm at the point now where I'm wondering why I didn't order one in 45/60 just to simplify things. Guess there's just something about a 50 caliber lever that keeps drawing me in.

I have a Chaparral .50-95 and have had no problems at all. Very nice wood to metal fit,rather plain wood,very nice CCH.
It came D&t`d for a tang sight and I put a Marbles on it. They use the same screws and thread size as the original Winchesters for the tang sight.
I have been shooting black powder in mine and need to work up a smokeless load for it. This summer I should have time to play more. They are impressive and a fun gun.

I think the 50/95 has a larger base diameter than 50Ak / 50-110 / 348 Win (by about 0.015").

I have a set of CH-4D dies in 50-110 and I can't say I'm all that impressed with the quality. They are quite agricultural compared to RCBS dies.

Now that RCBS has got the message that most folks aren't going to pay $275 for dies, they did us a good turn coming out with their new (Legacy??) dies for the older rounds. The list price is ~$60 for all the cartridges for the 76. I have ones in 45-75 and they didn't cut any corners by dropping the price to 22% of what it was. Now, I see no reason to buy "funky" dies.

I was eye balling an Uberti 76 in 50/95 for sometime and came close to getting it, but was holding off for a 45/60 just because it was easier to reload for, though the 50/95 would should be a good thumper.

All you guys lately with you 76's are killing me. I think my next PCS I will try and find one in 45-60. Sure are great looking guns.

I love my .45-75 SRC, also a Chaparral. It is some work and thought to produce cartridges but it is fun.

It seems to me that you have two choices on brass. Trim and form the .50 AK or trim, form & turn down the rims on the .50-90. The base of the .50-90 is right but the rim isn't. One has to turn down the rims for the cartridges to fit up the mag tube!

With a lathe, I'd sure rather turn down rim diameters than to thin rims. That is a pain in the butt even with a lathe. The 50-90s have a thinner rim and is a lot more likely to chamber without having to thin rims but that depends on the particular rifle. Mine won't work with .065 rims but it will with .062 rims the 50-90 has. Each individual rifle will tell you which route is easiest to go.
