Anybody load
450 grain lead bullets in their Marlin 1895 45-70s? If so, what powder and how much do you use? I've got a new LBT .460-450-M mould and would like to start gathering some data for loads, please?
Thanks, Steve

Re: Anybody load
I load that exact bullet in my Winchester 1886 EL. 1675 fps at a Quickload estimated pressure of 46,150 psi.
Starline brass, WLR primers, 42 grains of Reloder7, Lee FCD
I'm thinking that's too stout for the Marlin , but it's a starting point. Paco thinks the Marlin is good for 40,000 psi.
@ 100 yards:
A little stout for deer, wasted the entire front half and part of the onside rear quarter. My left hand is touching the entrance wound. Sort of. As I was touching off the round, the deer jerked and bit at it's side. The bullet passed through the skull before striking the shoulder.

Re: Anybody load
That is too stout for a Marlin. I would back that way off.
You know Tycer, you are just trying to kill the deer.

Yep. Paco thinks the max for the Marlins is 40,000 psi.Old Savage wrote:That is too stout for a Marlin. I would back that way off.
There is no published data for a 450 grain bullet in the 45/70 that I could find.

Yeah, I won't use that load again for non-dangerous game. The poor deer on that trip were for testing. I hated wasting all that tasty venison. Both were equally trashed.Old Savage wrote:

But I bet it will penetrate most anything if I heat treated the bullets. Mutant Zombie Bikers with a creamic plate might have to retrieve the whole plate from aft of the sternum.

Actually the tests run by Garrett and Linbaugh said that with lead bullets, slower is better for penetration than faster. Around 1300 to 1500 fps produced the most penetration. Even more penetration than the same bullets driven at 458 Win Mag velocities (which are slightly faster than 45/70 Ruger #1 max loads @ 50,000 CUP, NOT PSI). My 405 LFN hunting load leaves my Marlin 1895SS 22" barrel muzzle at 1600 fps (way below max) and I've never tore up a deer. All hits were pass thrus and were .458" in and .458" out, even the deer I shoot lengthwise. I do not worry about stopping one of our bears either.
Re: Anybody load
The Linebaugh penetration tests is why I was trying for 1500 fps, but I couldn't get the accuracy I wanted until 1675. I only tried Unique, 3031 and Reloder7. At 1300 fps, the bullet would not stabilize, it buzzed....zzzzzzzzzzz...clang. Kinda funny.Bear 45/70 wrote:[

Try either H-4198 or H-4895. I've had good luck with both. The best for me has been the H-4198 and is the only powder I now use in my 45/70 loads, except for the Black Powder loads I do for the Trapdoor. I found that longer, read that as heavier, bullets stabilized best regardless of velocity.

Try e-mailing Veral since it's his mould he might have some suggestions. You could also ask on his forum.
