Picked up a new 44-40 - not a lever though

Took a short road trip with a few buddies yesterday to check out a gun show. Few Marlin and Winchester levers, none that caught my eye though. But in the very back corner I spied something that was meant to come home with me. I handled Remington model 14's before, but this was the first 14-1/2 I've seen in person. Bore is excellent, but sometime in the past 94 years someone replaced the sights, cut down the mag tube (filed in the front hanger dovetail too) and tapped the side for a scope mount. But, since I was interested in her as a shooter and not so much as a collector, AND seeing as how it came with about 50 loaded rounds and some loose bullets, AND since it was one of the ones with the Dominion of Canada proof mark (ordered by the British military in 1915), AND since it was only $250 Canadian, it'd be a crime to leave it there.

Congratulations! A great find. Centre-fire pumps are illegal over here, more's the pity.

I am an expert on these rifles and can tell you that they need to be checked over by someone like myself to make sure they are safe to shoot.

You funny, Jerry. I love those Remington pups, and have been flamed several times for stating that they are better than Winchester pumps, the .22s that is. I actually prefer the Rems to the Wins. 14 1/2s aren't seen every day, especially those with Can. Mil marks.

Funny thing is, I now know where there are 2 more of these Dominion of Canada marked 44-40's for sale, and a guy I deal with on a fairly regular basis says he has a 38-40 carbine that he might consider selling.

The border might be a bit of an issue - they're both reasonably priced though. One with a replaced buttstock for $375 (was thinking about getting this one and putting together one "original" and one sporter rifle) and one in good original condition for $500. I'm really hoping I can get my hands on that 38-40 carbine though.

KK, you did great. Congratulations!

I cannot recall in recent memory the last time I saw a Remington 14-1/2, in a store, at a show, or in a collection. The last one I do remember was at a large show in the mid-1980s.

Remington 14-1/2 #2 should be here in a week and a half or so.
This one is complete and unblemished except for a replacement buttstock (really well done - complete with cheek rest). So I'll swap out stocks and have 1 complete original, and 1 sporter.
