It ain't a levergun but it'll do

Post by levallois »

I lucked into a Remington model 14 1/2 carbine made circa 1914 in caliber 38-40. They didn't make many of the 14 1/2 rifles and the 14 1/2 carbines are rarer than hens teeth. It's got an 18 1/2 inch barrel with an 8-round mag tube. It's slicker than you-know-what. It's not a levergun but it'll do.

I don't think anyone made a centerfire pump carbine (or rifle) that compared with the Remington Model 14 1/2 or Model 25.
That's a really nice find!

That would make a dandy home defense or camp carbine. Handy and fast to use.

Good find.

That's a very neat gun! I love those old Rem. centerfire pumps! Especially in pistol calibers!

It's been at least 40 years since I've seen one of those. Many congratulations!

I appreciate all the kind words about my latest obsession. They are truly rare. This is the first 14 1/2 carbine that I've ever seen in person in 25 years of looking at gun shows, gun shops and pawn shops. Remington made something like 126,000 of all the Model 14s and 141 slide actions and I've seen guesses in the neighborhood of 10,000 of these were the Model 14 1/2s in 44-40 and 38-40 calibers with roughtly 10-20 percent of these carbines. 1000-2000 carbines total? Small wonder they are rare.

Beautiful little carbine.
Just a couple hours ago I came across a 14-1/2 rifle in 44-40 newly listed on a dealer's site in Canada. Has an extended mag and the Dominion of Canada mark. Does anyone familiar with them marked as such? I read somewhere they were sent to Britain early on in WWI, but what would they be used for? Home guard units? POW camps?

Mike - your dealer collects 14 1/2 carbines? How many does he have?

KK - again, I'm no expert but I think the DCP 44-40 carbines were used or to be used by the Royal Navy. Very desirable version of the 14 1/2. I think there is one on Gunbroker right now being offered for $1400.

So I'm guessing $500Cdn is a deal?
I always liked the look of them - if they still have it Monday, I may have to snag it.
