Question on the .50 caliber ban in California
When CA had the stupidity to ban the .50 caliber in their leftist state, I think I was like most who assumed they were going after the .50 BMG round. But did that include other ".50's", like the old .50-70 Government, any of the .50-Sharps rounds (.50-90, .50-100, .50-110) and the .50-Winchester Express rounds? How about something like the .50 Alaskan? Or how about black powder musket balls over .50 caliber?
How far did this madness go?

This seem to be saying that it's 50BMG. Ft Lewis will not let 50 caliber centerfire of any sort on their Sportsmen Range

they tend to have exceptions for museum pieces, especially for their use in films. Read the code and wade through the legalese:
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html
good luck! Probably you will find that a 50 cal rolling block being transported to a movie set in a locked case by a California Condor and not concealed is perfectly legal.

"I'll tell you what living is. You get up when you feel like it. You fry yourself some eggs. You see what kind of a day it is."
No, they went specifically after the 50 BMG round. In fact, in the text of the law, they included the SAAMI dimensions of the round. An Ackley version of the 50 BMG would be technically legal. So would a California 49er, a slightly shorter version of the BMG with the shoulder bumped back. Of course, it might take you awhile to explain why your legal round still had the headstamp of the evil one if questioned.
Well done is better than well said.

You really ought to stop knocking CA. A statement like that pretty much brands all in CA as being stupid and leftist and deservedly so or not, it labels you as being arrogant and ignorant. I don't like a lot of the gun laws we have here in CA but I'm not stupid or leftist.Ysabel Kid wrote:When CA had the stupidity to ban the .50 caliber in their leftist state,
Modoc Ed, I don't take offense at such anti-California comments because, after living her over 40 years, I figure we deserve all of the ribbing. Our legislature is as corrupt as anything Louisiana ever produced and without the Southern charm. We have any army of poorly educated, left-leaning idiots who vote. Although that may not be exclusive to us, we seem to have the most virulent strain.
We used to be the model for how things should be done. Now, with the exception of a few conservative pockets like Orange County, we are run by greedy, moral degenerates and out-right racists and socialists.
I and my friends, try to vote this idiocy out but we are overwhelmed by the liberal morons and PC do-gooders who never met another man's dollar they didn't want to spend.
So, I put up with it (the ribbing) because I know why people can't resist the temptation. Geez, we can't even elect decent senators, not even one. Instead we continue to re-elect those two turd-polishing lick-spittles and we give the nation Nancy Pelosi! The People's Republik of Kalipornia, the Golden State? Please....... lets get real. We are like an old woman whose beauty faded long ago who refused to admit that she is no longer sexy. The state and it's leadership parade around in political thongs, vericose veins and saggy boobs swinging in the breeze. All the while touting our hotness.
I will stay for now and I will continue to be a sane and conservative voice raging against the storm of PC and liberal stuff. Fortunately, I also speak Spanish so when my state finally becomes Alta Tijuana I'll be ready.
BTW, I was driving down Van Nuys Blvd the other Sunday AM and was saddened beyond all endurance. What was once a vibrant middle-class business district was now a turd-world slum. Men were openly urinating in public, the smell of buring trash was everywhere, street venders were pushing elote carts up and down the sidewalks, drugies were lounging in almost every closed doorway and prostitutes were just finishing up their night's "work". The former GM plant was shuttered, Robisons-May Co shopping center was some sort of Pick and Save thrift shop and Spanish billboards and street signs prevailed. Like I said, the Golden State ... what a joke. If I started in on the Dept of Fish and Game stories I could fill books. Poke fun at Calif? Why not. We've earned it. Northern CA, YMMV ... for now but you're next in line for the same "improvements".

Y - when you are talking about Ca. gun laws you are talking about our dems. Now they are a sensitive lot and all, but, they do not know what they are up to on this, but, they do feel good about it, which is the point for them. I may have mentioned before that they have banned handguns that never existed. Now as a friend of mine told a group of liberal college professors Rosie and Diane can have guards with guns but a grandmother in Compton has no right to afford herself protection.
Don't expect these laws to make any sense. And when they can get their liberal judges invloved in the game laws, they don't make any sense either; it is cougars and condors they care about. Don't bother them with the facts.
Modoc actually lives in as close to a different state as you can but he doesn't have many voters. Neither do we here on the border of the two Californias.

Hell, I don't mind a good ribbing and can take as good as I give. It's just that in this case the word "their" preceeding "leftist state" implied ALL and that's just not the way it is.
Old Savage is right. The Legislature did ban a few handguns that didn't even exist, which although sad (as to their ignorance) was kind of funny.
We are know as the "Land of Fruits & Nuts" and justifiably so. The newest lead-free bullet ban in parts of CA proves it. We're just a little sensitive as to who implies that ALL Californians are Liberals.
Frankly, I don't know what the hell is up with the .50 Caliber ban here in CA. I thought the S&W .50 Caliber revolver was banned in CA but last week I was down in Redding, CA and a gun shop there had one for sale. I asked about it and the guy behind the counter said, it was legal. He even showed me the approved "CA Safety Drop Test List" for handguns and the S&W .50 Caliber handgun was on it. Go figure. I do know though that that revolver is banned for sale in Los Angeles (city) CA.

I might point out that a lot of those "nuts" come from the other 49. Remember, Pelosi is a transplanted Marylander. Most of the "out of staters" I've ever met have been drunks, dopers, dope dealers, meth cookers, thieves or Liberals. Does that mean the rest of you are?Modoc ED wrote: We are know as the "Land of Fruits & Nuts" and justifiably so. The newest lead-free bullet ban in parts of CA proves it. Back to the original question, cause the statement has been dealt with accordingly, it was specifically the 50 BMG. That was one of the main reasons Barrett designed and built the 416 BMG. An even more potent, more accurate and longer range weapon.
But theses morons in power have never seen a 416 Cal take down a plane like they've ALL seen with the BMG .
I'm sure one of them will eventually boost their IQ up above the 50 point mark and figure out some way to ban it, just give them time. Or maybe someone will kill a condor with it.
Anyway, for now, the 416 Barrett is legal here. I just can't afford to own or shoot one.

Guys -
I should have been more specific, and said "when the leftist politicians in CA had the stupidity to ban the .50 caliber in their never-ending attempt to create a socialist utopia". That would have been more accurate!
I apologize to have used such a broad brush - I know there are plenty - millions - of good folks in the state essentially held hostage by the Dems out there. I am sorry that I offended anyone here - that was not my intent!
I can rib folks with the best of them - including myself - but seldom do when it pertains to CA. That's just like rubbing salt in an open wound...
Sorry guys!

The wacky attitude is all around out here. I was driving around the National Forest, and came across an area that burned more than a year ago. It was still closed to public use, because it is "in recovery".
You can't walk on the dirt and ashes because it needs time to "recover". I know it's going to regrow, but my footprints are going to ruin it?

"I'll tell you what living is. You get up when you feel like it. You fry yourself some eggs. You see what kind of a day it is."
The ONLY reason that you are banned from walking in newly burned areas is that you might see and pick up an Indian artifact that was exposed by the fire. I walk all recent burns up this way, just for that reason.sobenk wrote:The wacky attitude is all around out here. Your footprints will not prevent the growth of new grasses and underbrush. The reasons posted by the agencies in charge are merely excuses.

Gents: I lived in the San Fran Bay Area 1968 - 2001. Definitely a strange place. But to point of this thread.
IIRC, CA 1st. tried to ban the .50's about 10-12 years ago. & one of the proposed bills was to ban all calibers above .50. While the title of the bill was a .50 BMG calibre ban & thus implied it was specifically the .50 BMG, a reading of the bill showed that it was to ban all calibers above .50. As written, it would have banned all calibers above .50: modern, obsolete, cartridge, muzzle loaders, shotguns, etc.
Senator Feinstein introduced similar legislation @ the federal level.
It was not until the CA Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) exposed this legislative hoax for what it really was -- a ban on all firearms above .50 calibre -- that opposition started to mount. In fact, it was not until CRPA showed that it would be very easy for the legislature to amend/revise the law to include other calibers that opposition took off.
About this same time, some elected Fool proposed another CA state-wide ammunition ban to prohibit the sale & possession of the 7.62X39mm round. However, a reading of the proposed legislation showed that it actually would have banned any & all military calibers -- obsolete, modern, foreign, & domestic. & @ the national level, I think Kennedy introduced a similar bill.
