OT: A question about single actions

Post by J Miller »

Single actions go with lever action rifles like home made jelly goes with hot buttered toast.

Wow, that came out of nowhere. Now I'm hungry.

OK, I've owned single action revolvers, double action revolvers, and bottom feeders.

Of these the Colt "type" single actions feel right to me. They feel natural in my hands and I get a pleasure from handling and using them that I do not get from the others.

Oh don't get me wrong, I can shoot a double action revolver or a semi auto pistol just fine, I just don't enjoy doing so as much as when I shoot a single action revolver.

Does anybody else feel this way or am out in left field by myself?

Joe

I agree. SA revolvers just intigrate better to the human form than DA revolers or autos if you aren't in the need for speed.

YES! They just feel right. I have to adjust my grip if I shoot double actions singley even though I have kept a couple of double action Colts. One is a King conversion Colt New Service 44-40 and the other is a Colt DS snubby. The King conversion is just to accurate to trade off and the snubby is a great carry revolver when you need concealment. The recoil is so much easier to control in a SA too. The eye appeal is second to none. Colt SAA all the way! :D

I've got fairly small hands, they're thick, which causes it's own problems, but my finger reach is short. The Colt SAA in 45 Colt w/4.75" bbl. fits my hand like a second layer of skin and I can reach the hammer without altering my grip. Plus, the balance and pointability of that particular shooter is like nothinig else I've ever ran across. I love mine.

I know what you're mean, Joe. The first time I picked up my one of father-in-laws 3rd generation Colts with a 4.75" barrel I couldn't believe how "right" it felt. The longer barrels don't feel as right to me. But that's why I got my Blackhawk with its 4 and 5/8's inch barrel. Doesn't have quite the same feel but it's close.

I hear ya loud and clear. Though I prefer the SA type, I go with the modern, stronger Ruger rendition, paired with a marlin rifle.

No denying the feel. But I also like the Smiths. Ergonomics of shooting is better with the Smiths for a lot of shooting - I have one with 6,000 through it. But, a 45 Colt SAA in 4 3/4 is about the handiest feeling thing there is.

The Colt SAA and it's clones felt good in my hand but the Rugers were very close too. I got rid of my single actions years ago (too slow to reload) and now only have double action Smith & Wesson revolvers, Taurus revolvers, a Cobra derringer, and Ruger Semi Automatic MK Is.

Even though I don't have any anymore, I think the best feeling guns I've ever had in my hand were various Colt 1911s that I have had over the years.

I did pick up a new Ruger Bearcat last Friday but reloading time is not important with it and it is so small that you really can't compare it to the feel of other single action revolvers.

Good thread topic Joe. Thanks for posting it.

You bet Joe. Ruger Flat Top with XR-3 for me. Or, a Super Blackhawk when it is cocked and in the hand. Nothing feels finer, or makes you feel the history like a SA.

Colt SAA design, the Ubertis, the older Rugers with the XR3 are the best feeling to me.
The newer Ruger XR3-RED grips the SBH, and the big grips as found on the Virginian Dragoon not so much.

When I pick up a single action it just becomes part of my hand. When I pick up a double action it's an object I'm holding.

My SA armies are my favorite handguns for nostalgia and appearance but they run a close second to my 1911 as the most comfortable gun to hold in my hand.
I also have a three screw Ruger blackhawk in 357 that fits as well as my SA Colts.
I don't know about the new Rugers as I have been boycotting Ruger products ever since they co-wrote the Assault weapons ban.
I don't forgive people no matter how much I like their product if they screw with my 2nd amendment rights. I'm not getting rid of the rugers I owned previous to that though, just won't buy anything else from them.

Joe I feel the same way, but in my case nothing feels and points as well as Smith and Wesson N frame revolver with 4,5, or 6 inch barrel. It may be the stocks I have used on them. With the single action revolver my hand automaticly grabs to high and if cocking with my left thumb will pinch the web of my hand with the hammer.

dr walker,

I've had S&Ws and Colts and Dan Wessons and all of them have the same exact problem. With the factory grips, or any wood grip, the hump at the top of the grip beats the web of my hand to the point of bruises and split skin. There seems to be a bone in there that I just can't get out of the way. For me to shoot a DA revolver I have to use some sort of rubber grips. Right now my two Smiths have the Pachmyre Grippers on them. This is the best set up for me.
Even so when I shoot them, I have to redo my grip for each shot. I used to do it without thinking about it, but now it just bugs me. My single actions just fit me.

I am aware that Bil Ruger himself didn't personally write it. He had his company legal department prepare the model legislation that was submitted to Congress and used as a starting point for the AWB that eventully became law.

I second the request for that source. On the grip issue, I vastly prefer the Ruger Bisley grip.

I'm no great fan of semi-autos, but some of them fit my hand pretty well.

And I've shot S&W DA revolvers for so many years that no other DA grip feels right.

And I like the feel of Ruger Blackhawks.

But for sheer sensuous pleasure, nothing equals the feel of a Colt Model 1851 .36 Navy. Apparently the folks at Colt felt the same way because they used the M-1851 Navy grip frame on their brand new cartridge revolver, the Modle of 1873 Single-Action Army Revolver.

Nothing like a Colt-style SA grip!

Joe,
Have you ever tried Jordan Trooper Grips? they do a great job of spreading recoil over a wider area. If they were available for J-Frame Smiths, I'd try a pair on my Always Gun.

I've got really large hands, and yet the SAA still feels just right in my hands. That said, I love the feel of S&W MAgna Target grips also, and they feel just as good, even though they are completely different.

No Doc I haven't. It seems that every time I thought about it money was short so I just bought another set of Pachmyres.

Marlinman93,
I don't know if my hands are big or not, but it seems that my hand just swallows the Colt size grips.

Unless Pachmayr has drpped the line, they make plastic versions ot the Jordan Trooper Grip. That is what I have on my 686. I'd not have any if I'd had to pay a couple of hundred bucks for them.
