Marlin or Winchest sight identification

Post by pbslinger »

Please help me identify this sight so I can figure out what gun it will go on. I have a forged rear sight for a dovetail mount that is similar to Marlin and Winchester levergun rear sights, except it doesn't have a slot for a sliding elevator.

The elevation is set with a small screw on the right that allows a the notch to move up and down in a small slot machined into the sight body. The sliding portion has a white diamond on it and can be reversed top for bottom if a smaller notch is desired. Does the rear of the sight just sit on top of the barrel or is there another spacer of some kind.

Thanks. I would take a photo but my camera isn't here now.

It sounds like an old Marbles. This may have been factory for a Winchester, but not a Marlin.

There is nothing stamped on the top or bottom?
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

It's most likely a Marbles that uses the double sided elevator. Here's a pic of the one on my Marlin 1894 Cowboy:

It also has the adjustable, reversible plate with the white diamond on it. You just can't see it from this angle.
You can get these elevators from Marbles. There are two sizes depending on the length of the rear sight.

Hey there pbslinger - Here are a few rear sights. The first is a Williams where you change the whole leaf. The second is a traditional Winchester/Marlin with single elevator, and the third is a Marble's. Of course the most likely candidate is missing the elevator! It should have the twin leaf elevator like in J Miller's picture. It has the white diamond turned in. It is stamped Marbles... above the dovetail. Any of this look familiar? Any of them will fit a Marlin or Winchester with a 3/8's dovetail. Hope this helps. Watch yer top knot. Wind

Thanks guy! you nailed it!

Does the Marbles elevator work just as well with a round barrel as with one with a flat? Are these sights an upgrade on many Marlins and Winchesters?

Hey again - They'll work on round or octagonal barrels. For the most part the elevator is riding on the tangent of a round barrel and the flat of an octagonal barrel. I'm not a huge fan of that model of Marbles sight and prefer the "Marlin CS" folding leaf sight that Marlin sells on their carbines. These have a shallow "v" with a divot at the bottom you can nestle a front sight bead in. I think the last one I ordered was less than $17 dollars. Having the white diamond showing on the Marbles sight is illegal for use in SASS sanctioned Cowboy Action Shooting. Hope this helps. Watch yer top knot. Wind

what's the opposite of upgrade? possibly the least desirable sight
to find on a collectable, but they are usable for all that.
i have a couple one on a nice winchester , the other in a drawer
somewhere.

They came as original equipment on many older guns & in many configurations, buckhorn, semi buckhorn, flat. I kinda like them, no worse than any other barrel mounted sight anyway.
The old ones had a stepped dimple on the tongue to help slide the elevator.
