Huntin' , shootin' & fishin' after a hip replacement?

Post by otteray »

Just like all the old time photos and tin types of my Dad's side's family males; all pictured with a cane, and a few pixs with a cane, dog and shotgun.
My turn now.
I'm getting one tomorrow; hope it holds up for what I still want and need to do.
At first, Doc had shown me a small, dull finished half plastic model;
but I requested a super-duper-alloy -top of the line-metal model, that just glimmers in the light!
It has barbs on the shaft that is hammered into you legbone, so it will lock in solid.
Oh boy.
Anyway, who here has one and still goes hiking around in the woods with a rifle or shotgun or else is in rivers and creeks, with a rod and reel ?

I wish you all the best, Sir......Work hard at rehab......My GF has two replacement hips and raises cows and works a day a week in the stock auction moving the animals around. She sez she feels great and can do anything that she wants, even more because it don't hurt anymore.

Governor Schwartzenegger has one several years old. Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson played professional football with one briefly; he retired when he discovered most of his zip was gone. And I recently read of a ballerina who had the surgery. Included with the text was a photograph of her in -- I believe the technical phrase is -- "a real uncomfortable position," one I couldn't begin to contort to.

If you got a top-of-the-line prosthesis and have been/will be diligent in your rehabilitation, there will be very little you cannot do. One thing, though, be sure to plasticize a letter from your orthopedic surgeon describing your prosthesis. You will have fun going through metal detectors.

Good Luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery!!

I can see one of those in my future. A couple bad accidents and other abuse and
I'm already in trouble.

I have always fallen on my right side; surfing, skiing ,slipping on ice or mud, mountain biking, etc.
It all adds up, in addition to being hereditary . and 59.75 years.

Plasticized description! Excellent idea!

Best of luck with your surgery. Prayers up for you.

Your physical therapy will be the path to a complete success. Sometimes, it'll be a real beotch and painful but stick with it.

I had a hip replacement in 1992. There were two common methods of replacement. One for older bones is to bore the leg bone and epoxy the pin in place, the second is to bore the hole slightly undersize and drive the pin in. Both use a non-metal cup in the hip. The advantage of the drive in pin is that the bone may regenerate around the side of the pin. This makes it almost permanent. I had the latter proceedure. I'm at 17 years and it still works great. Normal lifetime was 8-10 years when I had mine done. There is a period of healing that must not be abused. Mine took about 3 months. I don't even think about having a tin hip anymore. I do everything I would do normally. I'm sure they have given you all kinds of pamphlets on what to expect. My only word to you is take your time healing. Don't push it! They even use micro surgery now with a smaller incision, mine was about 7". Less healing time. You can expect some post surgery pain, mostly from the incision, for several days. No big deal with the pain killers available today. Good luck!

Good luck with it, but from what my customers tell me when they come back for their medicines post surgery is that they feel better than they have in a long time. I think you will be better off than before. Listen to the Doctor and the Physical Therapist. They know what is best for you while in recovery. Physical Therapists are not sadists, but sometimes there will be pain to reach a goal.

I had a hip replacement in 2004 the doc put in a ceramic joint as the ceramic parts can be replaced if they wear out without a total replacement,as bad as it will hurt when you get home start on your leg exercises and build up the muscles. When you get mobile remember to go up and down stairs the proper way and to get in and out of a vehicle properly. danny

Hope it works out for you.
My friend who's 41 just had the new type done, where they cap the ball with titanium, and put a matching "cup" in the socket.
It's been a little less then 3 weeks and he has started going back to work.
I'd of given it another week or so, but he claims everything's good.

Wow, Surgery on Wednesday and now I'm home! :D
Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes; they worked!
My friend with the grazing land that has a wild pig problem stopped by my hospital room to tell me to hurry and get well for hunting there!
Things are looking up already.
