OT - Maple Seed Salad

Post by deerwhacker444 »

Last year there was somebody on here that professed to cooking up a batch of maple seeds in some sort of salad, but I can't remember who. I was wondering if whomever it is has a recipe they can share. The maples in the back yard are loaded, but they might get nipped by cold tonight. Is this about the right size to eat em?

Does it matter the type of the tree? I have no idea what variety of maples these are, nothing special, just garden variety.

Go easy on the quarters..............they're hard on your teeth! But seriously, I would think they'd be somewhat bitter-tasting. But, what do I know? jd45

the first two weeks or so of their appearance is the perfect time to be eating them. Try those as they are right now. They won't be stringy and are sweet, not bitter. I am looking forward to them here in PA. Will be a few weeks yet here. Garden goes in, in the next couple of weeks. Spring is almost here!!!

You gotta get the stems off. I sauteed in butter. My first time. Those thin little stems were like wire.

Wow! You guys got seeds on your maples already?
It's 7 below zero as I type this, Unusual for almost mid march but even in a normal spring we are quite a ways off from maple seeds.

So, you guys eat the wings too, not just the seeds, huh?

[BTW, I tried some raw, wings and all, last year based on a thread discussing them on this forum. Not bad!]
