I've made up my mind the next firearm I get it's going to be an Uberti '76 in 45-60. I have a Shiloh Sharps in 45-70, a Win. '86 in 45-90. I really like the '73/'76 and having a 45-60 makes sense to me because I can use components from the others to load rounds and scavenge brass from.
Kirk's range report got me looking around and I again found his writing on the '76. I've read it before. Nice report by the way Kirk. I'm sold on getting one. I like the prices on the Chapparal's, but I don't want to roll the dice on whether I get a good one or a bad one. So, it's the Uberti. Just have to move things around a bit.
I find myself waffling between the old '73's and a new '76, but I'm going for the '76. Here's my dilema, I hunt up to big game, elk, someday would like to do moose, but it's in bear and big bear country. I don't want to depend on a 44WCF or 38WCF if there's trouble. And, the bottom line, I really WANT one.

Just curious, but are you going 45-60 instead of 45-75 because the brass is more easily formed from 45-70 or 45-90 or something? I'm not really educated in the 1876 chambered cartridges but I'm taking from your post that this is the case? Or is there some historical draw to the 45-60 versus the others.

RM, it's because the 45-60 is easily made from 45-70 brass, bullets should be compatible with the 45-70 and 45-90. I believe the 45-75 is actually the initial cartridge offered in the '76 with the 45-60 and 40 caliber coming a couple of years later.

You may need to trim the case rims. Some Uberti .45-60 are fine with trimmed/shortened .45-70 cases, others will require the rims be thinned. They are very pretty, well built rifles. Good Luck, 1886.

i think the uberti 76 in 45-60 is a great choice....
I have been eyeing one for quite some time.....
but i just went to the dentist....and there went the 76
I just saw a Uberti '76 in my local gunshop today. I was there to pick up my Marlin336T. It is a demo left ther by a company rep. It is new and unfired. They had $1199 on it but I am certain they will take less. It is a 45/60 with a 26 or 28 inch bbl. Let me know if you want more info.

Call me crazy but I'm rechambering a 45-60 to 45-75. The 45-60 just wasn't that interesting to me. Maybe because it is made from more easily obtained brass. Who knows, I did say I was crazy
Hey 86, you never did say whether those thinned rim cases you got from me worked out in your rifle.
The "bottom line"! I saw an Uberti .45-60 1876 today as well at a pawn shop - only lever they had in the place. It was NIB, and $1100. Just for pricing - I know you're not ready yet. You'll love it when you get it, and wonder why you waited so long!
