OT - Winchester 63

Post by brionic »

Local seller has one in what seems to be pretty nice condition, and I'm intrigued. Haven't seen it yet, except for pictures. He's asking something around $700.

Anyone have any advice on these, what to look for, etc? Not familiar with them, but I've been interested since reading John Ross :)

Thanks!

They are neat rifles. Most are extremely accurate. I like mine. 700.00 is around what I paid for mine a few years back.

$700 is good for a truly mint 63. If it's pre-war, with the top tang d&t'd, or it's right at the end of production, with the grooved receiver, then it's a fantastic deal. If it's a one of the Browning "Made in Japan" repro 63's and it's NIB, then it's a good deal.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

It is my favorite .22. I bought mine from a sport fisherman in San Diego. It had been used as a shark killer on his boat. The condition was between being dropped a 100 feet unto a rock and being dragged down a highway for several miles and left in a wet field. Anyway, after restoration I've kept it going on 50 years. I love the way the receiver rings as the action functions. It has never broken a part. Those were some of the finest rifles Winchester ever made. I can shoot 3/4" groups at 50 yards off a bench. I'm sure a GOOD shot could do better.
