336SC Rifling

Post by Bearhands »

I am wondering if the SC model had ballard or micro-groove rifling? I've been looking at one for some time now @ a local shop.... Can anyone expound a bit on this model? Value of one that has seen some wear but cycles smooth as silk and looks to be all original.
Thanks

The 336SC model is my favorite :!: Most of the 336SC models that I see have the microgrove rifling and it will say it on the barrel. I think the change over was around 1955. Prices around here go between $300-$400 dollars. If the one you are looking has ballard rifling and it's in 35 Remington I will be expecting you posting pictures tomorrow :D .

Update:... the one I THOUGHT was an SC was in fact an RC... 30-30 born in 1952 ... I still may go back for it, but I really wanted a 30-30 in an SC. btw, the price was $295.00. There was an SC there in 32spl from 1958 w/ a tag of $349.00

the 30/30 wont have microgroove & the 32 will.
I'd go get that 32 if it was me.

The .30-30 with Ballard rifling is the most valueable of the two, while the .32 SC will be most desired. Still they don't bring what the earlier Ballard rifled guns bring, and it almost sounds like they've got the prices reversed. If you really want the SC go back and tell them you'll take it if they'll give it to you at the RC price. See what they say!

Actually the older RC 30-30 w/ the Ballard rifling turns me on. It's just your basic rifle that hasn't been messed with at all.. Still has the original sights and just feels "nice" at the shoulder. I am trying to trim down on my "collection"of calibers and stick with one reloading caliber, the 30-30 (I just have a "thing" for em). I have an older Mod 94 (1948) in wonderful condition that I love dearly and I'd like to keep it that way.
A stock refinish (very optional) on the RC would be just about all it'd need to make it a great "go to" gun for whatever I choose to "go to" There's just something about the older guns that the newer ones can't compete with. Comments are always welcomed, and thanks for the opinions and replies!!!

I have a inclination to old Marlin 336As with Ballard rifling. I have the trifecta being a 30-30, 32 Special, and a 35 Rem. Just today I added an F prefix 336 ADL in 30-30 to my collection. What a sweet looking rifle. I have a couple SCs as well as not everything needs a 24" barrel. Old Marlins are just plain cool rifles.

johnly, I recently found a 336A in .35 w/24" bbl, which is what I've been looking for, & 2/3rds mag tube, made in '51. $300. I"ve got an RC in .35 as well, but I wanted to see what kind of velocity I could get with the longer bbl, and how well some castGC bullets do in the ballard rifling. I should have it out of layaway in a couple months. Can't wait to shoot it! jd45
