Marlin 44/45 heavy bullets

Post by crowkiller »

I remember reading some where (the search was not successful?) that the Marlin 44 mag rifles are limited in how heavy a bullet you can use? I do not remember anything being said about the 45 Colt rifles? I am looking to use 260 to 300 grain bullets for a toting around rifle.

I use 300grain .45's in my trapper all the time and my dads Marlin also shoots them fine. There are quite a few folks around that shoot slugs much heavier then that with good results.

45 BULLETS

Post by jtaylor1960 »

The 45 Colt in the 94 Marlin has a 1 in 16" twist an I am told it will shoot a bullet well over 300grs. Glenn Fryxell has written some articles on the subject.

Some people have some success with 300g 44 mags in carbines, but mine won't shoot 320s, they tumble. Plus the Marlins need a little tweaking to get longer carts to feed.

Marlin uses a very slow twist in the 44 mag barrel that is designed to stabilize 240g bullets. Folks report good results with bullets around 265g. I finally gave up trying to get the Marlin 1894 to shoot heavy for caliber lead.

I've seen cast 340's do very well out of a 24" .45Colt 1894CB.

My 94 (44mag) does real well with 290gr swc bullets. Haven't tried anything heavier.
