new front sight

Post by two bit okie »

I am going to shorten the barrel on one of my leverguns from 20" to 16.25". I have a Marlin and puma. the marlin has a screwed on ramp, and the Puma has a dove tail. I dont know about the cost to have either done to the shorter barrel. The local gunshops are saying $150.00 to do the work. cut and dovetail.

I can do the cut part, but the dovetail is a lot out of my line. of course so is drilling and tapping those little tiny holes that do not go through the barrel into the bore.

both rifles are 44 mag and the muzzle end is not real thick.

input and suggestions appreciated.

If you feel comfortable cutting and crowning, you'll probably enjoy the satisfaction doing the rest yourself also.
Midway sells a dove tail cutting jig and files. If you have a drill press and taps the sight screw holes should be no trouble, just take your time and measure twice! I have chopped three of my lever guns, if you run into problems you can PM me anytime.

I agree with Salvo. I have some old "home gunsmithing" books, even one by P.O. Akely, that tell you how to cut dovetails with just a couple of files.
