OT: Fatties Unite - It's not our fault ...

Post by J Miller »

Being fat is caused by a virus. These guys say so  . My wife asked: "What else are they gonna feed us?"

There maybe something to this though. I've noticed personally that when I get sick with certain infections I will bloat up. Problem is, most of them I can't get rid of it.

Obesity 'Virus' Spreads Like Common Cold, Scientists Say

Monday , January 26, 2009

Obesity can be "caught" as easily as a common cold from other people's coughs, sneezes and dirty hands, scientists said Monday.

The condition has been linked to a highly-infectious virus which causes sniffles and sore throats.

Nikhil Dhurandhar, an associate professor at The Pennington Biomedical Research Center, in Baton Rouge, La., said the virus, known as AD-36, infects the lungs then whisks around the body, forcing fat cells to multiply and also causing sore throats.

"When this virus goes to fat tissue it replicates, making more copies of itself and in the process increases the number of new fat cells, which may explain why the fat tissue expands and why people get fat when they are infected with this virus," Dhurandhar said.

In one test, a third of obese people had the rare and highly contagious virus compared to just 11 percent of thinner people. Weight gain can last three months until the body has built up resistance to the bug.

New research supports earlier theories from studies on weight gain; evidence in tests on mice and chickens shows the bug could cause overweight people to gain weight.

"People could be fat for reasons other than viral infections, so it’s pointless for fat people to try to avoid infection," said Dhurandhar.

The study also reveals research claiming dieters always feel hungry because humans have a "natural body weight" and they will always suffer hunger pangs.

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a campus of the Louisiana State University system, conducts both clinical and basic research. Its mission is to promote healthier lives through research and education in nutrition and preventive medicine.

Hey can we sue someone? Totally not our fault, or the fault of the double whopper with cheese!

Seriously, I just got a bad cholesterol report and bad LDL's. In 2 and 1/2 weeks I have lost 10-11 pounds....working out every day except Sunday and watching my fat intake. Only 70 more pounds to go!

UGLY ? I dunno if ugly can be solved/fixed.

Heck, I'm so ugly - when I was a kid, my parents kept a pork chop tied around my neck, so's the dog'd play with me ! ;)

I can see how the body might bloat as it retains fluid in order to stay hydrated and fight infections.

But as I was pointing to my wife yesterday as we sat down for dinner in the Flying J truckstop there must be one hell of a virus running rampant among the trucking community as 99% of the drivers suffer from overweight issues.

Thankfully I tip the scales at 155# soaking wet.

DBW,

This fat virus caught me early. I haven't weighed 155 since well ...... geeze I do not remember. I was hitting 195 in my senior year of high school and wasn't too much overweight then.

Oh, for the good old ( skinny ) days.

PUT DOWN THE DONUT! Step outside, then keep going for a mile or two, then come back. Repeat every day.

I've noticed every time I've "caught" the fat virus, I've been able to beat it down by liberally applying hard work and exercise. If I do it enough, I can eat sausage and eggs for breakfast, greasy cheesies with fried onions for lunch, and meatloaf for dinner.
